That's such a shame. Seeing as it run off when the boy pulled his arm away, I doubt she was a real danger. Otherwise, she would have had his arm off no problem.

Tis ok, I'm more worried bout the nosy skunks than a bear. It's sad bout the boy though. Hope he's not scared off from camping anymore.

Unfortunately, that's not quite accurate. Once a bear, or any other wild animal loses it's fear of people, they are a danger to anyone they come across. Their fear of us is what protects them from us, and us from them. Once that's gone, forget it.

Generally, BR, I agree with what you say. But a 2/3 year old bear? A crowd of people with noisy and bright objects, banging, and so on with lots of shouting can soon instill fear in most animals. There are exceptions, but young bears aren't one of them.:-6

I'm not sure what you mean:

And that is puzzling, Snooze. Usually there is some effort at relocation. Too bad we're running out of places far enough away from humans to put these animals.

Well, I'm off out to my tent now. It's too hot in here.
A young bear is easy to intimidate, especially when faced with a crowd of noisy ranting folk like us 'umans tend to be at the best of times. A rhinocerous would be a typical example of an animal, as an exception to the rule, that wouldn't be too easy to intimidate.
But, as Snooze says, it could have been relocated.

Well, I could go along with that if it weren't that we see quite frequently now that bears are consistently becoming more used to humans, and are in fact being raised by their mothers to rely on humans and their garbage and such as a source of reliable food. The young bears are learning that people are NOT something to fear.
(Ok, I really do feel dense today...what do you mean, "It's too hot in here"??) :-2

Or did he just have to "grin and bear it?"

Yes, I know there's a huge problem with bears roaming on family estates and raiding the garbage bins, etc. But it could be another idea for the locals to stir up that community spirit and go scare a bear.
Nah. Just joking. Heaven forbid. We do enough damage to the environment as it is which, I believe is part of the reason why bears have begun invading towns.
what do you mean, "It's too hot in here"??
Hot as in physical temperature. Despite a thunderstorm, there was about 5 minutes of rain and the lightning was mostly occurring above and between the clouds. It was like a greenhouse in here last night!:yh_sweat As it hadn't cooled down much from the storm, I'd decided I was going to sleep in the tent and it was time for me to go and crash out.
Nothing concerning the forum (sorry, no gossip to impart there).

Although it was cooler outside, the atmospheric pressure was too high. I had to sleep on top of the sleeping bag or suffer a sauna.
I didn't perceive you as thick, BR. A single phrase can have more than one meaning.
You know, BR. Having read some recent threads, it occurs to me that this forum in particular is like a pioneering forum of sorts. English speaking people from around the world are being drawn together in what is for the most part, a harmonious gathering of minds.
It is through this medium that English will evolve as we negotiate the differences between our use of the language. And, we are beginning a process that will have a large effect on the way the world thinks as more minds come together like this.:-6

It's a good thing there are no bears in the UK. Any bear finding Pinky in a pink tent would think it had found a gift wrapped snack...:wah:

And all you wanted was a good night's kip.

Yup, ok then. For bear photos.
If you go down in the woods today,
You're sure of a big surprise.
If you go down in the woods today,
You'd better go in disguise.
For every bear that ever there was
Will gather there for certain because
Today's the day the Teddy Bears have their picnic.
Every Teddy Bear who's been good
Is sure of a treat today.
There's lots of marvelous things to eat
And wonderful games to play.
Beneath the trees where nobody sees
They'll hide and seek as long as they please
'Cause that's the way the Teddy Bears have their picnic.
If you go down in the woods today,
You'd better not go alone.
It's lovely down in the woods today,
But safer to stay at home.
For every bear that ever there was
Will gather there for certain because
Today's the day the Teddy Bears have their picnic.
Picnic time for Teddy Bears...
The little Teddy Bears are having a lovely time today.
Watch them, catch them unawares,
And see them picnic on their holiday.
See them gaily gad about.
They love to play and shout.
They never have any care.
At six o'clock their Mummies and Daddies
Will take them home to bed,
Because they're tired little Teddy Bears.

Thanks, OM! It's a joyous picture and it comes at a good time!
The quote by Einstein reminds me of this...a favorite of mine.
"We need another and a wiser and perhaps a more mystical concept of animals.
Remote from universal nature, and living by complicated artifice, man in civilization surveys the creature through the glass of his knowledge and sees thereby a feather magnified and the whole image in distortion. We patronize them for their incompleteness, for their tragic fate of having taken form so far below ourselves.
And therein we err, and greatly err. For the animal shall not be measured by man.
In a world older and more complete than ours, they move finished and complete, gifted with extensions of the senses we have lost or never attained, living by voices we shall never hear.
They are not brethren; they are other nations, caught with ourselves in the net of life and time, fellow prisoners of the splendour and travail of the earth."
Henry Beston

Lulu. Your quotation is rather poignant to me. (Nearly finished my quota for that word 'poignant' now:D .)
You may not be religious. I'm not particularly affiliated to any one body. But when I read the creation of Man in Genesis, it occurs to me that God intended us to live in the same manner.

Maybe so. Maybe not. I've wished many times that the translation of that passage about Adam which says something about how God "set him down in dominion" over the animals had used the word STEWARDSHIP, instead.
What a difference it could've made.
I'm glad you liked the Beston quote...thought you might.

I did like the quote.
I don't think it would have mattered which word was used. To have stewardship still petains to be in control. To have power over something doesn't mean we have to corrupt or ruin it or try and make it extinct. It is from the perspective of children that we should view life.
