Here's the deal: I've got 5 planter barrels out front that I recently
planted with zinnia seeds, all different kinds. Well, 4 out of the 5
barrels, sprouts are "up". Can anyone here think of ANY reason why
the 5th barrel is a no go? Same type of barrel, same soil, same
watering, same light characteristics. I'm rackin' my brain, and I got
nothin'. I'm going to have to re-plant, I guess, and that barrel
will be behind the others, which isn't a tragedy... but I'm stumped.

Could it be a "bad" packet of seeds??? Did each barrel get separate packets of seeds??

I suppose it could be... but the barrels are large and have two packets
each so that would mean 2 bad packets, not just one... hmmm...
I'm going to go look and see if 2 of them have an old date or something...

That'd be great but I don't think broccoli would make it this time of
year!!

SnoozeControl wrote: I'm guessing it's probably the barrel. Maybe there's an inside coating the others don't have that's polluted the soil.
I bet Weeder knows.
Bet she does. The barrels have all been used for a few years, though,
so I think if it was a coating thing, they'd have shown up by now.
I might have jumped the gun though, looking at the packets the
sprout times are a variable. Some say 5-8 days, some say 7-10
so I could still be within that upper number, maybe I just need more
patience!!

Why shore! Shouldn't be that long though, if the earliest came up at
the 5 day mark, then the others should be up in 2 or 3 more days...
let's hope, they're called pinwheels zinnas and very pretty...

Have you had any birds around your barrels. They sometimes like to eat your seeds before they sprout.

Where do you live? I ask because how cold has it been? We wouldnt plant
seeds outside here until Mothers day at the earliest. We have had frost a few nights here. If you had frost... that could be the one barrell that was affected. Or, it could be the one receiving the least amount of sun. Or, the soil in that barrell could be the most dry. Im sure you know seeds have to be warm and moist to sprout. Thats all I can think of.

My Zinnias came up, then disappeared. I think it was snails (slugs). I replanted in small plastic pots with good results. I will plan twice as many next year. Seed qulaity is an issue. When you find a "bargain", don't be shocked when you open the package to find 10 seeds.
Planted 04/10/06
Morning Glories or vinging to 3'
Bird House gourds leafing at 10"
Cucumbers vinying 10"
Jalapeno, serano and pablano peppers up. Slow starters
Basil doing very well.
Dill up slowly
Mint no show
Sage no show

JB, I replanted that barrel, it will be about 10 days behind the others
but that's alright.
I think I did just get 2 really bad packets of seed. It was Burpee, and
they are reliable usually, so I don't know. But the new stuff has
sprouted just fine.
(Wish I could send ya some mint... got a boatload!!
