TEN COMMANDMENTS FOR RESPONSIBLE PET OWNERS

1. My life is likely to last 10-15 years. Any separation from you will be very painful.

2. Give me time to understand what you want of me.

3. Place your trust in me. It is crucial for my well being.

4. Don't be angry with me for long, and don't lock me up as punishment. You have your work, your friends, your entertainment. I have only you!

5. Talk to me. Even if I don't understand your words, I understand your voice and when it's speaking to me.

6. Be aware that however you treat me, I'll never forget it.

7. Before you hit me, remember that I have teeth that could crush the bones in your hand, but I choose not to bite you.

8. Before you scold me for being lazy or uncooperative, ask yourself if something might be bothering me. Perhaps I'm not getting the right food, I've been in the sun too long, or my heart may be getting old and weak.

9. Take care of me when I get old. You, too, will grow old.

10. Go with me on difficult journeys. Never say, "I can't bear to watch it" or "Let it happen in my absence". Everything is easier for me if you are there. Remember, I love you.

All so very true.

The last one is so very true. Last year, when I put my old girl to sleep because of cancer, I made sure that I was there. Her head was in my lap and her face was bathed in my tears.

My mom is facing the realization that her 10 year old Standard Poodle may not be around for a whole lot longer. He is showing signs of senility and has a limp that he jsut can't seem to shake although x-rays show no abnormalities. I was shocked when she told me that when the time came, she would not be there to hold him and say good-bye. She says she just isn't strong enough. So, I guess that job will fall to me.

oh how sad I wish you the best with that it sure is not easy, have so far in my life had to put 2 old friends down, one of cancer, one was too old to withstand surgery for a dislocated hip oh how we love our pets.

Val - your posting of these could not be more perfect.

I just walked into my living room to find my window box with my pansies and marigold seeds dug up and the floor covered in dirt!!!

Yes, I crated the dog - but only so I wouldn't kill him!
