Mother, mother ocean, I have heard you call

Wanted to sail upon your waters since I was three feet tall

You've seen it all, you've seen it all

Watched the men who rode you switch from sails to steam

And in your belly you hold the treasures few have ever seen

Most of 'em dreams, most of 'em dreams

Yes I am a pirate, two hundred years too late

The cannons don't thunder, there's nothin' to plunder

I'm an over-forty victim of fate

Arriving too late, arriving too late

I've done a bit of smugglin', I've run my share of grass

I made enough money to buy Miami, but I pissed it away so fast

Never meant to last, never meant to last

And I have been drunk now for over two weeks

I passed out and I rallied and I sprung a few leaks

But I got stop wishin', got to go fishin'

Down to rock bottom again

Just a few friends, just a few friends

Mother, mother ocean

After all these years I've found

My occupational hazard being

My occupation's just not around

I feel like I've drowned

Gonna head uptown.....jimmy buffett.

Tull usually hits the mark:

My first and last time with you and we had some fun.

Went walking through the trees, yeah! And then I kissed you once.

Oh I want to see you soon but I wonder how.

It was a new day yesterday but it's an old day now.

Spent a long time looking for a game to play.

My luck should be so bad now to turn out this way.

Oh I had to leave today just when I thought I'd found you.

It was a new day yesterday but it's an old day now.

Modern Woman - Billy Joel

You see her sitting with her coffee and her paper

With her high top sneakers of italian design

With a long cool stare she aggravates the tension

Makes up her face while she makes up her mind

Now you're in trouble, maybe she's an intellectual

What if she figures out you're not very smart

Or maybe she's the quiet type who's into heavy metal

Boy, you got to get it settled

Cause she's breaking your heart

Don't try to put on an act

You can't do that to a modern woman

And you're an old fashioned man

She understands the things you're doin'

She's a modern woman

She looks sleek and she seems so professional

She's got a lot of confidence, it's easy to see

You want to make a move

But you feel so inferior

Cause under that exterior

Is someone who's free

She's got style and she's got her own money

So she's not another honey you can quickly disarm

She's got the eyes that make you realize

She won't be hypnotized by your usual charm

You've got your plan of attack

That won't attract the modern woman

Whe you're an old fashioned man

She understands the things you're doin'

She's a modern woman

Time goes by and you're sharing an apartment

She says she loves you but she doesn't know why

In the morning she leaves you with your coffee and your paper

It's a strange situation for an old fashioned guy

But times have changed

Things are not the same, baby

You overcame such a bad attitude

Rock and roll just used to be for kicks

And nowadays it's politics

And after 1986 what else could be new

You got to learn to relax

And face the facts of modern woman

And you're an old fashioned man

She understands the things you're doin'

She's a modern woman

Same songwriter, similar resonance:

I'm no great looker, I'm no fast shakes, I'll give you a steady push on a six knot simmering high tide.

I can hold us down, keep our head to the wind or let us roll on the broadside, cold spray flying in,

and we'll ride on the swell and our hearts are alive.

Let me make you my seal driver.

I could captain you if you'd crew for me, follow white flecked spindrift, float on a moonkissed sea.

Could you fancy me as a pirate bold, or a longship Viking warrior with the old gods on his side?

Well I'm an inshore man and I'm nobody's hero, but I'll make you tight for a windy night and a dark ride.

Let me take you in hand and bring you alive.

Going to make you my seal driver.

STAIND LYRICS

"It's Been A While"

And it's been awhile

Since I could hold my head up high

And it's been awhile

Since I first saw you

And it's been awhile

Since I could stand on my own two feet again

And it's been awhile

Since I could call you

And everything I can't remember

As ****ed up as it all may seem

The consequences that I've rendered

I've stretched myself beyond my means

And it's been awhile

Since I can say that I wasn't addicted

And it's been awhile

Since I can say I love myself as well

And it's been awhile

Since I've gone and ****ed things up just like I always do

And it's been awhile

But all that **** seems to disappear when I'm with you

And everything I can't remember

As ****ed up as it all may seem

The consequences that I've rendered

I've gone and ****ed things up again

Why must I feel this way?

Just make this go away

Just one more peaceful day!

And it's been awhile

Since I could look at myself straight

And it's been awhile

Since I said I'm sorry

And it's been awhile

Since I've seen the way the candles light your face

And it's been awhile

But I can still remember just the way you taste

And everything I can't remember

As ****ed up as it all may seem to be I know it's me

I cannot blame this on my father

He did the best he could for me

And it's been awhile

Since I could hold my head up high

And it's been awhile

Since I said I'm sorry

This song doesn't actually describe me...I'm struggling to find one that does...but i do know that this is the song that 'wakes my spirit', makes me sing and makes me dance. I love the tune and the beat...good old Queen...always lift my spirits..Play it as loud as the neighbours will allow...:D

Buddy you’re a boy make a big noise

Playin’ in the street gonna be a big man some day

You got mud on yo’ face

You big disgrace

Kickin’ your can all over the place

We will we will rock you

We will we will rock you

Buddy you’re a young man hard man

Shoutin’ in the street gonna take on the world some day

You got blood on yo’ face

You big disgrace

Wavin’ your banner all over the place

We will we will rock you

We will we will rock you

Buddy you’re an old man poor man

Pleadin’ with your eyes gonna make you some peace some day

You got mud on your face

You big disgrace

Somebody better put you back in your place

We will we will rock you

We will we will rock you

Billy Joel - You're only Human

You’re having a hard time and lately you don’t feel so good

You’re getting a bad reputation in your neighborhood

It’s alright, it’s alright

Sometimes that’s what it takes

You’re only human, you’re allowed to make your share of mistakes

You better believe there will be times in your life

When you’ll be feeling like a stumbling fool

So take it from me you’ll learn more from your accidents

Than anything that you could ever learn at school

Don’t forget your second wind

Sooner of later you’ll get your second wind

It’s not always easy to be living in this world of pain

You’re gonna be crashing into stone walls again and again

It’s alright, it’s alright

Though you feel your heart break

You’re only human, you’re gonna have to deal with heartache

Just like a boxer in a title fight

You got to walk in that ring all alone

You’re not the only one who’s made mistakes

But they’re the only thing that you can truly call your own

Don’t forget your second wind

Wait in that corner until that breeze blows in

You’ve been keeping to yourself these days

Cause you’re thinking everything’s gone wrong

Sometimes you just want to lay down and die

That emotion can be so strong

But hold on

Till that old second wind comes along

You probably don’t want to hear advice from someone else

But I wouldn’t be telling you if I hadn’t been there myself

It’s alright, it’s alright

Sometimes that’s all it takes

We’re only human

We’re supposed to make mistakes

But I survived all those long lonely days

When it seemed I did not have a friend

Cause all I needed was a little faith

So I could catch my breath and face the world again

Don’t forget your second wind

Sooner or later you’ll feel that momentum kick in

Don’t forget your second wind

Sooner or later you’ll feel that momentum kick in

I've been told that Metallica's The Outlaw Torn is me by several people. They may have a point.

The Outlaw Torn

You know I wait my whole lifetime for you

I ride the dirt I ride the tide for you

I search the outside search inside for you

To take back what you left me

I know I'll always burn to be

No one seeks so I may find

And now I wait my whole lifetime

My whole lifetime

So on I wait my whole lifetime for you

So on I wait my whole lifetime for you

The more I search the more my need for you

The more I blast the more I bleed for you

You make me smash the clock and feel

I'd rather die behind the wheel

Time was never on my side

So on I wait my whole lifetime

My whole lifetime

And I'm torn

And if I close my mind in fear

Please pry it open

And if my face becomes sincere

Beware

And when I start to come undone

Stitch me together

And when you see me stretched remind me of what left this

outlaw torn

And if I close my mind in fear

Please pry it open

And if my face becomes sincere

Beware

And when I start to come undone

Stitch me together

And when you see me stretched remind me of what left this

outlaw torn

And young men don't know what I know, too fast when I'm slow, they just come and go.

Don't fall for all that noise and all that bluster, all that rush of blood, that soon will pass.

I have more than they will ever muster, why confuse mere energy with class?

Young women remember that I'm still right in my prime, I take my time,

So don't be a sad regretter, you could do much better, why waste all your time and your allure?

Why not find yourself a man who's more mature?

You know what to do, just smile and say oooh, and I'll carry through. It could even be you.

"Stand"

You feel like a candle in a hurricane

Just like a picture with a broken frame

Alone and helpless

Like you've lost your fight

But you'll be alright

[Chorus:]

Cause when push comes to shove

You taste what you're made of

You might bend, till you break

Cause its all you can take

On your knees you look up

Decide you've had enough

You get mad you get strong

Wipe your hands shake it off

Then you Stand, Then you stand

Life's like a novel

With the end ripped out

The edge of a canyon

With only one way down

Take what you're given before its gone

Start holding on, keep holding on

[Repeat Chorus]

Everytime you get up

And get back in the race

One more small piece of you

Starts to fall into place

Ooohhh

[Repeat Chorus]

I don't know if this one defines me, but its given me comfort a fair bit over the years...

Let Your Soul Be Your Pilot - Sting

When you’re down and they’re counting

When your secrets all found out

When your troubles take to mounting

When the map you have leads you to doubt

When there’s no information

and the compass turns to nowhere that you know well

Let your soul be your pilot

let your soul guide you

he’ll guide you well

When the doctors failed to heal you

when no medicine chest can make you well

When no counsel leads to comfort

when there are no more lies they can tell

No more useless information

And the compass spins

the compass spins between heaven and hell

Let your soul be your pilot

Let your soul guide you

he’ll guide you well

And your eyes turn towards the window pane

to the lights upon the hill

the distance seems so strange to you now

the dark room seems so still

Let your pain be my sorrow

let your tears be my tears too

let your courage be my model

that the north you find will be true

When there’s no more useless information

And the compass turns to nowhere

that you know well

Let your soul be your pilot

let your soul guide you

let your soul guide you

let your soul guide you

guide your way

Hope it's okay just to jump in here...

Btw, I'm not a 'juvenile' (well, except in spirit sometimes :wah: ) but the rest fits. :)

Vienna by Billy Joel

Slow down you crazy child

You're so ambitious for a juvenile

But then if you're so smart tell me why

Are you still so afraid?

Where's the fire, what's the hurry about?

You better cool it off before you burn it out

You got so much to do and only

So many hours in a day

But you know that when the truth is told

That you can get what you want

Or you can just get old

You're gonna kick off before you even get halfway through

When will you realize...Vienna waits for you

Slow down you're doing fine

You can't be everything you want to be

Before your time

Although it's so romantic on the borderline tonight (tonight)

Too bad but it's the life you lead

You're so ahead of yourself

That you forgot what you need

Though you can see when you're wrong

You know you can't always see when you're right(you're right)

You got your passion you got your pride

But don't you know that only fools are satisfied?

Dream on but don't imagine they'll all come true

When will you realize

Vienna waits for you

Slow down you crazy child

Take the phone off the hook and disappear for a while

It's alright you can afford to lose a day or two

When will you realize...

Vienna waits for you.

And you know that when the truth is told

That you can get what you want

Or you can just get old

You're gonna kick off before you even get halfway through

Why don't you realize...Vienna waits for you

When will you realize...Vienna waits for you

Bez wrote: I've sure been 'rockin' today....Status quo, Queen, Dire Straits...the lot...We need something obscure, then. This impressed me so much when I was at school that it's still stuck in my head. Bill Oddie had well over a hundred of his songs broadcast in the 60s and I listened to most of them doing my homework. It's strange, the things that have lasting influence. Surprisingly, Google doesn't know of it yet.

She's gone, she's gone, she's gone, she's gone...

She was just sixteen, she was tall and lean, she was as ugly as can be

But I'm ugly too so she had to do, she was the only girl for me

Well the poets find that love is blind but alas it isn't true

Cause in the still of the night I shake with fright when I remember you

Oh yes my baby's gone and I ought to be sad but to tell you the truth I'm really glad

Cause I was sick of the sight of her plain old face and now she's gone to a much much better place

One day for my tea she gave to me my favourite meal of fish

And strange to relate she met her fate struck down by her own fair dish

With a bone in her throat she was mortally smote and she died on the kitchen floor

And it seemed to me she'd never been so beautiful before

Oh yes my baby's gone and i ought to be sad but to tell you the truth I'm really glad

Cause I was sick of the sight of her plain old face and now she's gone to a much much better place

Chantilly Lace - Rolling Stones

Hello, baaaaby!

Yeah, this is the Big Bopper speakin'

Ha ha ha ha ha! Oh, you sweet thing!

Do I what? Will I what?

Oh baby, you knoooow what I like!

Chantilly Lace had a pretty face and a ponytail hangin' down

A wiggle in her walk and a giggle in her talk

Make the world go 'round

Ain't nothing in the world like a big eyed girl

To make me act so funny, make me spend my money

Make me feel real loose like a long necked goose

Like a--oh baby, that's a-what I like!

What's that, baby?

But... but... but... oh, honey!

Oh baby, you know what I like!

Chantilly Lace had a pretty face and a ponytail hangin' down

A wiggle in her walk and a giggle in her talk

Make the world go 'round

EASY ONE:D

Remember when you ran away

And I got on my knees and begged you

Not to leave because I'd go beserk?

WELL,

You left me anyhow and

Then the days got worse and worse

And now you see I've gone completely

out of my mind

AND

(chorus 1):

They're coming to take me away,

Haha, they're coming to take me away,

Ho ho, hee hee, ha ha,

To the funny farm

Where life is beautiful all the time

And I'll be happy to see

Those nice young men

In their clean white coats

And they're coming to take me AWAY,

HA HAAAA

You thought it was a joke,

and so you LAUGHED, YOU LAUGHED!

When I had said that losing you

Would make me flip my lid,

RIGHT?

You know you laughed.

I HEARD you laugh, you laughed

And laughed and laughed

And then you left,

But now you know I'm utterly mad

AND

(chorus 2):

They're coming to take me away,

Haha, they're coming to take me away,

Ho ho, hee hee, ha ha,

To the happy home with trees and flowers

And chirping birds and basket weavers

Who sit and smile and

Twiddle their thumbs and toes

And they're coming to take me away,

HAHAAAAAAAAA

I cooked your food,

I cleaned your house,

And this is how you pay me back

For all my kind unselfish loving deeds

HUH?

Well, you just wait,

They'll find you yet,

And when they do, they'll put you in

the ASPCA, you mangy MUTT,

AND

(chorus 1)

(chorus 2)

(chorus 1 trailing into mumbles in the distance) ....... JUST LIKE ME:D

What can I say..!! Beach Boys "California Girls" :D :D

[QUOTE]"California Girls"

Well east coast girls are hip

I really dig those styles they wear

And the southern girls with the way they talk

They knock me out when I’m down there

The mid-west farmer’s daughters really make you feel alright

And the northern girls with the way they kiss

They keep their boyfriends warm at night

I wish they all could be california

I wish they all could be california

I wish they all could be california girls

The west coast has the sunshine

And the girls all get so tanned

I dig a french bikini on hawaii island

Dolls by a palm tree in the sand

I been all around this great big world

And I seen all kinds of girls

Yeah, but I couldn’t wait to get back in the states

Back to the cutest girls in the world

I wish they all could be california

I wish they all could be california

I wish they all could be california girls

I wish they all could be california

(girls, girls, girls yeah I dig the)

I wish they all could be california

(girls, girls, girls yeah I dig the)

I wish they all could be california

(girls, girls, girls yeah I dig the)

After much consideration, I gotta go with Shania:

"Juanita"

Juanita She is the restless river

running through my veins

She rides without the reins--

her name's Juanita

She lives in the heart of every

woman in the world

Within the reach of every girl

who wants to meet her

(She's gonna be ridin' through)

Her name's Juanita

(She's gonna be ridiin' free) She's ridin' free

(She's gonna be inside of you, gonna be

inside of me) She's inside of you

and inside of me, yeah

[Chorus:]

Oh, go with her--flow with her

Dream with her--scream with her

Let her take over, or just get to know her

Be everything you can be

If you can find her and free her

Juanita will unchain your heart

When someone tries to take

away the freedom of your choice

To take away your voice--

that's when you need her

She's there if you dare to give

your broken wings a try

C'mon and take a leap and fly,

and you can be her

(She's gonna be ridin' through) Oh, Juanita

(She's gonna be ridin' free) Ridin' free

(She's gonna be a part of you, gonna be a

part of me) She's a part of you and a part

of me, yeah

[Repeat Chorus]

[Instrumental Solo]

Oh, go with her--flow with her

Dream with her--scream with her

Let her take over, or just get to know her

Be everything you can be

hahahahaha ...... not really .... just more stupid I guess ........ I was gonna put ... but then I would have to change my title to Queen Terry ....... RIP the wonderful Freddie, you are much missed and this is a truly superb song:-6

When the outside temperature rises

And the meaning is oh so clear

One thousand and one yellow daffodils

Begin to dance in front of you - oh dear

Are they trying to tell you something

You're missing that one final screw

You're simply not in the pink my dear

To be honest you haven't got a clue

I'm going slightly mad

I'm going slightly mad

It finally happened - happened

It finally happened - ooh oh

It finally happened

I'm slightly mad

Oh dear

I'm one card short of a full deck

I'm not quite the shilling

One wave short of a shipwreck

I'm not my usual top billing

I'm coming down with a fever

I'm really out to sea

I think I'm a banana tree

Oh dear

I'm going slightly mad

I'm going slightly mad

It finally happened - happened

It finally happened - uh huh

It finally happened

I'm slightly mad

Oh dear

Ooh ooh ah ah

Ooh ooh ah ah

I'm knitting with only one needle

Unravelling fast it's true

I'm driving only three wheels these days

But my dear how about you

I'm going slightly mad

I'm going slightly mad

It finally happened

It finally happened - oh yes

It finally happened

I'm slightly mad

Just very slightly mad

And there you have it

The Kinks, would you believe it, from their "Muswell Hillbillies" album which spoke volumes to my generation ...

This is the age of machinery, a mechanical nightmare,

The wonderful world of technology, napalm, hydrogen bombs, biological warfare.

This is the twentieth century but too much aggravation,

It's the age of insanity, what has become of the green pleasant fields of Jerusalem?

Ain't got no ambition, I'm just disillusioned.

I'm a twentieth century man but I don't wanna be here.

My mama says she can't understand me, she can't see my motivation. Just give me some security,

I'm a paranoid schizoid product of the twentieth century.

You keep all your smart modern writers, Give me William Shakespeare,

You keep all your smart modern painters, I'll take Rembrandt, Titian, Da Vinci and Gainsborough.

Girl we gotta get out of here, we gotta find a solution,

I'm a twentieth century man but I don't want to die here.

I was born in a welfare state, ruled by bureaucracy, controlled by civil servants and people dressed in grey.

Got no privacy, got no liberty, 'cos the twentieth century people took it all away from me.

Don't wanna get myself shot down by some trigger happy policeman, gotta keep a hold on my sanity,

I'm a twentieth century man but I don't wanna die here.

Indeed I would. The Kinks are my favourite band, despite Ray and Dave being misguidedly Arsenal supporters (really should support another North London team :D ) I do so love them. Waterloo Sunset is my anthem, perhaps because I was Born at Waterloo and it also has my name in the lyrics, despite never finding my Julie :-1 I must be a few years younger than you, but although I also love Muswell Hillbillies, my fave is "Arthur" the original Soap Opeta before The Who's Tommy (Pete will confirm that) followed by "Village Green". If you have not yet bought the three CD reissue of "Village Green", you really must.

When youre weary, feeling small,

When tears are in your eyes, I will dry them all;

Im on your side. when times get rough

And friends just cant be found,

Like a bridge over troubled water

I will lay me down.

Like a bridge over troubled water

I will lay me down.

When youre down and out,

When youre on the street,

When evening falls so hard

I will comfort you.

Ill take your part.

When darkness comes

And pain is all around,

Like a bridge over troubled water

I will lay me down.

Like a bridge over troubled water

I will lay me down.

Sail on silvergirl,

Sail on by.

Your time has come to shine.

All your dreams are on their way.

See how they shine.

If you need a friend

Im sailing right behind.

Like a bridge over troubled water

I will ease your mind.

Like a bridge over troubled water

I will ease your mind.

Perfect !!!

Mine has gotta be the French song by Carla Bruni on her great 2002 CD "Quelqu'un m'a dit". It's called "I'm Excessive"

etc... ahhh

No excuse, no excuse...

I decided that the "she" should be a "he" ;)

Somebody

I want somebody to share

Share the rest of my life

Share my innermost thoughts

Know my intimate details

Someone who'll stand by my side

And give me support

And in return

She'll get my support

She will listen to me

When I want to speak

About the world we live in

And life in general

Though my views may be wrong

They may even be perverted

She'll hear me out

And won't easily be converted

To my way of thinking

In fact she'll often disagree

But at the end of it all

She will understand me

I want somebody who cares

For me passionately

With every thought and

With every breath

Someone who'll help me see things

In a different light

All the things I detest

I will almost like

I don't want to be tied

To anyone's strings

I'm carefully trying to steer clear of

Those things

But when I'm asleep

I want somebody

Who will put their arms around me

And kiss me tenderly

Though things like this

Make me sick

In a case like this

I'll get away with it

Jimmy Buffett's tune from Coconut Telegraph.

Tells it like it is

Im Growing Older, But Not Up.

I rounded first never thought of the worst

As I studied the shortstop's position

Then crack went my leg like the shell of an egg

Someone call a decent physician

I'm no Pete Rose, I can't pretend

While my mind is quite flexible

these brittle bones don't bend

Chorus

I'm growing older but not up

My metabolic rate is pleasantly stuck

So let the winds of change blow over my head

I'd rather die while I'm living then live while I'm dead

Sometimes I see me as an old manatee

Heading south as the waters grow colder

He tries to steer clear of the hum drum so near

It cuts prop scars deep in his shoulders

That's how it flows right to the end

His body's still flexible but that

Barnacle brain don't bend

Chorus

So now don't get me wrong

This is not a sad song

Just events that I have happened to witness

And time takes it's toll as we head for the poll

As the days grow more complicated the night life still wins

Chorus

Let the winds of change blow over my head

I'd rather die while I'm living then live while I'm dead
