SnoozeControl wrote: SUNLAND, Calif. -- Mayvis Coyle, 82, believes she's not getting a fair shake from the Los Angeles Police Department.

She says she was shuffling with her cane across busy Foothill Boulevard in Sunland Feb. 15, carrying groceries, while a traffic police officer watched and waited.

Even before Coyle finished crossing the intersection at Woodward Avenue, he had scribbled a $114 ticket for crossing against a don't-walk signal, the Daily News reported.

"I entered the crosswalk, it was green," Coyle, who is fighting the citation, told the newspaper. "It turned red before I could get over. There he was, waiting, the motorcycle cop. He said, 'You're obstructing the flow of traffic'."

Coyle and other seniors at Monte Vista Mobile Estates are up in arms over signals they say are too short to safely cross the five-lane boulevard, the Daily News reported.

They say signals turn red before they can reach the opposite curb on Sunland-Tujunga's busiest thoroughfare.

So many seniors have complained about hasty intersections that Councilwoman Wendy Greuel asked transportation officials last week to study how to accommodate them, according to the Daily News.

The Coyle incident "has brought to bear an issue that is relatively common," Greuel told the newspaper. "We should look at those areas with predominantly seniors and accommodate their needs in intersections."

The danger to pedestrians -- particularly seniors -- is acute, according to police. Of the 94 pedestrians killed in the San Fernando Valley from 2003-05 while crossing the street, 31 were seniors, the Daily News reported.

Hey, it's not always the senior's fault!!!! A few times I had to cross a "6" lane street (With a 4ft median srtip inbetween directions) here in SUNNYLAND. I pushed the button on the corner pole to change the light in my favor. When the signal indicated that I finally could start to cross, I do start to cross right then & there (& I'm pretty darn fast, so no snide comments) & I have noticed the same thing. The light changes when I'm only half way across, & I have to really run fast to get to the other side. You should take "Notice", in the part of the article above in "RED", it says "31" killed were seniors, that's only "1/3" of the 94 total killed. That means that "2/3" of the younger people could not make it across either. So the light seems to change too fast for all!!! :guitarist So. . . . . . . :-2

I'd have booked her, and cuffed her. There's no way I could be the good cop. :)one time there was a geezer busily stealing high-end groceries at the market. i spotted her and watched her until she went out the door. then i busted her. she pulled that "i am a poor old lady" crap, but you know what? she wasn't stealing hamburger, she was stealing shrimp. and she stone refused to give me her ID, which by law she has to. so i sent her arse to jail just for the experience.

While we're here calling senior citizens old geezers, and laughing at their needs for Depends, remember we are all going to be there one day. I agree a lot of seniors act like the world owes them because they are old, but there are also a lot of very kind, very sweet seniors out there. Working with mainly WWII vets I deal with them every day. I have a very sweet customer who has Parkison's. Shuffling across 2 lanes is an ordeal for him, let alone 6 lanes? I would be outraged if he were given a ticket for walking too slowly. Did the cop have nothing better to do?

I just got through looking at all the posts on the "Illegal immigrants" thread, and all the rights they think they're entitled to & are demanding here in this Country! So what about all the seniors (that are legal citizens in this Coutry) who have "legally" worked in this Country & paid taxes & SS "into this Country's hoppers" all of their lives! Surely they should be entitled to a little consideration? Yes, some of them may be nasty & mean because they are treated like "second class" citizens, just because they're lucky enough to be old. But they're still "legal" citizens! And that may just be their point, they "are" citizens not Illegals, but are treated worse then the Illegals, just because they're old!!!

There really could be more consideration, & or special treatment provivded for this Country's seniors! (Other than "Early Bird Specials! :D :wah: )

It would be prudent to remember, that someday if one is lucky enough to live another 40, 50, or 60 years, then they too will be the "seniors"!

So beware, it kinda just sneaks up on you, when you weren't looking!!

I know that the government over here is introducing a free bus scheme for the elderly that entitles them to free bus travel as long as they are over a certain age. Mind u I don't think that it's been hugely favourable, especially considering some of the more important issues such as council tax and what-not that effects them a lot more than free buses do.

Right chris, I have heard in other Countries, where the older people are called "Elders". (Not Seniors) "Elders" meaning a term of "respect". And those Elders are "revered" for their lifelong accomplishments they've made, & wisdom they posses, and their opinions & guidance are sought after by the young. Not so here in the USA, as the "Seniors" as they are called, are basically discarted, pushed aside, made fun of, thought of as a drag on society, and totally disrespected. As it stands, USA society should really be ashamed!

(This whole "Ticket" nonsense, is just one of the latest things that goes to support that point!)

SnoozeControl wrote: Here's an update:

LOS ANGELES - Mayvis Coyle got more than just a $114 jaywalking ticket for taking too long to cross a busy street.

With the 82-year-old woman’s fine has come international celebrity ” she has camera crews showing up at her home, invitations to appear on television and support from around the world.

“I didn’t want all this publicity,” Coyle said Thursday. “But I’m not objecting to being used if it gets the lights changed and gets respect for the elderly.”

Los Angeles police officials say Coyle entered a busy San Fernando Valley intersection on Feb. 15 after the red “Don’t Walk” sign began blinking. They say the department is cracking down on wayward pedestrians because an increasing number of them are being killed by cars.

Coyle says she began shuffling across the intersection with her cane in one hand and groceries in the other on a white “Walk” signal. The great-great-grandmother plans to fight the ticket.

Her plight has drawn attention from blogs such as the Drudge Report and media around the world. “STICK YOUR FINE,” Scotland’s Glasgow Daily Record said.

Now, camera crews show up at Coyle’s trailer unannounced, asking her to tell and retell her story. Because she doesn’t have a phone, the trailer park’s office manager has been taking messages; “The Ellen DeGeneres Show” called Thursday, wanting to book an appearance.

People who e-mailed the Los Angeles Daily News, which first reported Coyle’s story on Monday, generally agreed that the officer should have simply escorted her across the street.

“Where are the Boy Scouts when you need them?” wrote one reader from Washington state. “This is so beyond ridiculous!”

The office of City Attorney Rocky Delgadillo is reviewing Coyle’s ticket, spokesman Frank Mateljan said.

City Councilwoman Wendy Greuel has directed transportation officials to figure out how to make signals longer near senior housing and community centers. They’ve already lengthened the walk light at the intersection where Coyle was ticketed.

"That COP" is the one who should be ticketed for being such a dumb-ASSSS!!!:guitarist
