"CSI effect," the notion that television shows like CSI taint juries and educate criminals, making the job of law enforcement officials more difficult.



I heard about this one day on CNN. I didn't get to see the show, but I was interested in the theory.



I was wondering others opinions on this theory.

What's Next? The Fecal Diaries







First it was CSI, a forensic lab team based in Las Vegas, using all the state of the art forensic lab equipment known to man in an attempt to solve crime. Not to be outdone, along comes CSI Miami, different lab investigators but still the same story line. And then, CSI New York. We can't let a hick town like Las Vegas or Miami show up the Big Apple. Hell, they are just as able and willing to disect tissue, smear and dilute blood and urine to find and put away the bad guys. People are fascinated with stuff like this. Autopsies, weighing and disecting organs. It's no doubt the same folks that watch NASCAR Racing for the accidents. AND TONIGHT????? I watched the new show "BONES". Yep, you guessed it. Now we have a anthropologist investigator picking over bones to solve crime. The crimes are so bad of course that the only thing left is bones.

In another attempt at one-upsmanship, I propose a new show. Let's call it "The Fecal Diaries" Crimes so bad that there are no bones, blood or tissue to be found. Just some feces. We could make a MICROBIOLOGIST the hero of the show. See him now as he picks his way though a pile of feces of unknown origin in attempt to solve an unknown crime.

Ok - I'm not watching the "Fecal Diaries" but I am a huge fan of NCIS.

i've watched CSI miami. it's pretty futuristic fiction for the most part. i certainly don't think it benefits the average criminal, who is as dumb as a box of rocks.

I watch it once in a while. I just think there has been over-kill with similar type programs.

I'll agree about the overkill with similiar programs.



LC do you think the shows are helping the law enforcement, due to more people interested in those jobs.

LC do you think the shows are helping the law enforcement, due to more people interested in those jobs.i do think that because there are so many programs, both fiction and non-fiction, focused on crime-solving, that many more people are entering related fields... criminology, forensics, the science of DNA, etc. and it seems that many more of those are women than ever before.

I love NCIS too. They have such neat characters........... :-6

I catch NCIS now and then. I love the scientist lady though, she cracks me up.

I absolutely Love CSI. I have all the BOX sets of the released series.

I also love Profiler, the X-Files and Millenium.

I don't think a criminal is bright enough to use some of the info that they show and to commit a perfect crime would be so much harder then it looks.

But realistically I don't think the police agencies would really have the time or resources to check into cases like they do on TV.
