When the berlin wall came down it was a national movement by ordinary people that had finally had enbough of being told what to do and no longer believed in their leaders. Many on the left can't accept that people who are capable of thinking for themselves are not necessarily going to agree with them therefore they are-deluded, ignorant of the true sutuation, duped by capitalist propaganda from the west. I raised the question of the standard of living in Russia in the 80s compared to the last ten years, and you responded with the actions of the Germans, East and West. Self-determination within the occupied countries of Eastern Europe is interesting but beside the point.

Oh, and "Think about it. When the decisions of one man can affect the future of your family for generations to come, what kind of a man do you want making those decisions" is a quote that seems to have gone over everyone's head. It was an advertising slogan for Nixon in his campaign against JFK, in 1960. If just gets more resonant as time passes. I hope to goodness that some other republican tries to resurrect it in 2008.

I was thinking of russia as in it's whole spehere of influence. But I take your point. However there`was also watching Boris Yeltsin standing up to the atempted military coup with the apparent backing of most of the population old Moscow. Most people in the west thought that a resurgence and emergence of another communist leader was inevitable One way or another I don't think things will ewverf go back to what they were with russia being able o restore it's hegemony as before, and the push for social change will come from people themselves, hopefully thgorugh the balloty box rather than strong men. I do tend towards optimism.
