Sky Captain Barely Stays Aloft

If ever a film was nowhere, this is it. Kerry Conran's debut feature, Sky Captain and the World of Tomorrow, was shot completely in a studio, and it has a kind of timeless, placeless feel.
On the one hand, Sky Captain looks like something completely new: Conran's innovative, digitally enhanced blue-screen techniques, which he famously showcased in a six-minute short film, convinced producer Jon Avnet to fund the $70 million project.
