I think Obama could pull off the Jim because it was Jim Leher running the debate...but I thought the other name was Tom. Either way, I'm not sure why someone hasn't run with this in the media. Maybe he was trying to pull off that "you're not important enough to remember your name" game.

Hoss;999144 wrote: It seemed very obvious to me especially the way the air quality looked during the Olympics. I thought the press reports of air quality during the Olympics all said that it was good. Did you see any which said otherwise? I'd quite like to read what you saw.Air quality had been highlighted as the one issue the International Olympics Committee were most concerned about in advance of this year's Games. But in the event, although smog blighted the opening day, the air cleared quickly as the effects of a massive shut-down of industry and "alternate day" restrictions on private car usage began to be seen. About 150 factories in the city had production shut down, while others closed as a result of tighter security during the Games. The ban on cars on alternate days, depending on whether they had odd or even licence plates, reduced the number of cars on the roads by about a million a day.
On several days, the sky really was blue, and on Monday the mountains that surround the city to the north and west were visible from the city centre, an unusual event for the usually humid, overcast summer months. Figures from the city's bureau for environmental protection showed there were 14 days in which air pollution met its "level one" criteria - matching the level the World Heath Organisation declares safe when achieved over the long term. The rest of the month was level two, which meets China's own standard for a so-called "blue sky day", except for one day which failed.
Average pollution was down 45 per cent, bringing it down to levels not seen since ten years ago, the ministry said in a statement on its website. "Temporary measures to reduce pollution that were put in place in Beijing and surrounding provinces to guarantee clean air for the Olympics played a fundamental role in improving the air during the Olympic period," the bureau said. The success of these measures has caused one major problem for the government though: what to do when the restrictions are due to be lifted after the Paralympics end on September 20.
Several newspapers and internet bulletin boards have reported demands by residents that some at least remain in place - a reflection in itself of the how the Games may have raised expectations of greater participation in decision-making by citizens. Xinhua, the state news agency, reported that an opinion survey of 10,000 people found 56 per cent in favour of retaining some restrictions.

With Mexican labor so cheap, it's amazing they don't just make them with pride right across the border in Mexico.I was just ribbing ya anyway. I own (or owned) stock in Toyota. It's a global company now, just like GM & Ford. I think they should build Tundras in Alaska; that'd make more sense.

No our economy would really go down the toilet if countries return to mercantile economics. So would everybody elses come to that. It doesn't work. The UK is a global trading nation we depend on trade to survive. Try talking to someone involved in exporting and see what they have to say about it. Same with those who want to pull out the EU. Our main trading partner is the EU if we withdraw goodbye inward investment hello mass unemployment as companies shift to keep inside the EU. Try having a look at who is investing in china and the far east and who is exporting to them the answers might surprise you.

Works the same way with american companies manufacturing in foreign countries. let's say we took the same attitude in europe with General Motors and Ford. Neither company would still be in existence-it's their foreign subsidiaries that are propping the home company up at the moment and it's their foreign subsidiaries that the technical edge comes from to allow them to compete with the japanese competition. They try and sell american made cars here-apart from being vastly overpriced for what they the build quality leaves a lot to be desired. The best one is the chrysler PT Cruiser but that's actually made in Germany.
Just don't buy any french cars THEY ARE RUBBISH!!

There are very few patriots left anymore. I agree Hoss. I am fiercely Patriotic. I would defend my country & my queen without doubt. I was angry with my husband buying the chinese iron. It's still in it's packaging, it can go back. My family has an impressive war history & although i was a girl, my dad brought me up with "Better to be a good runner up, than a damn right coward". It's got me into trouble before. We get Christmas on a ship here. I believe it's one of the largest ships in the world, comes here packed with cheap consumer crap from china ready for christmas. You know I don't even know who the shadow home secretary is. Having trawled through the telegraph-not something i normally do-I assume you mean the comments on sharia courts. Actually I am against any kind of religious courts and would be just as opposed to christian extremism as to muslim extremism. While I'm at it I would do away with faith based schools of any kind. We should jest sell cars in our own countries, forget the imports. If the US stopped car imports then the domestic market would be fine. I bet we buy more cars than anyone else.
No without trade your economy would be in severe trouble. You only think you import a lot you actually export rather a lot as well. We would develop other markets your industry would simply stagnate without the fresh breeze of competition and no export markets. Your domestic car market-well american cars seem to be crap basically-although all i can judge from is the ones I've seen here. All the innovation is being imported. Let's face it without european ingenuity you wouldn't have cars in the first place. The industrial age owes little to america, imagine a world with No cars, no TV, no telephone no computers, no jets no radar and on and on and on. All imported technology. You benefited from industrial society you didn't actually invent it. The real danger is you will end up a backward country again if you now become isolationist. The rest of the world will survive you will be in schtook.

That is an insult to all those who fought in the british armed forces in world war two. In case you've forgotten we stood alone when everyone else thought we were done for. It wasn't the amerians that saved us in 1940 we did that ourselves. Far from helping us there were many americans who actively supported the nazis and did their level best to block any attempts on the part of roosevelt to sell us weapons and plenty were cheering the nazis on. We had to bankrupt ourselves to pay for the aid we did get and kept on paying until just recently. We also had to hand over all the technical advances we had made as part of the deal for which we have never received proper recompense. American nazis became very quiet after pearl harbour but they didn't actually go away.
Yes americans played a big part in winning ww2, I wouldn't dispute, si did the Russians and the Chinese, but without the british being prepared to stand and fight regardless of the odds history would have been very different.

Bollocks, they need to be brought up to remember our history and the vital lesson that when push comes to shove we are on our own. America might get involved but only if it is in their interests to do so. We don't need to sit on anyone's coattails. Appreciative yes but let's forget this nonsense about a special relationship. AIR QUALITY OVER BEIJING OLYMPICS. Without Predjudice
A journalist has revealed today that the air quality in Beijing was actually a Conspiracy by The British Monarchy.
It's believed that The Duke of Edinborough gave permission for the UK government to scramble it's entire Air Force. Undercover of darkness, Harrier Jets dropped 6 million tonnes of smoke bombs over Beijing on the eve of the opening ceremony.
It's alleged that HRH Queen Elizabeth was behind the secret plot in an attempt to hide embarassment when once again, British athletes returned with no medals.
It's rumoured that the BBC have handed a tape of a conversation between The Duke of Edinborough and Gordon Brown, the Prime Minsister to Metropolitan Police.
It's believed that The Duke may be charged later in the year with conspiracy to blame Chinese Pollution for breathing difficulties to excuse poor performance in British athletes.
The Duke has denied these allegations. It's claimed by palace officials that he was elsewhere at the time, planning a car crash in a tunnel for Paul Burrell.
Gordon Brown claims he was elsewhere at the time, -- Just being Scottish.
