Voting is compulsory in Australia - which is kind of an interesting idea.

I've voted both ways, and rather enjoy the social part of lining up with the neighbours and buying school fund raiser cakes afterwards. If I could vote from my computer, it wouldn't be nearly as much fun. But I'm a geek.....

You must vote in your own area and are marked off in an electoral roll. If it looks like you've failed to vote, you get a please-explain letter. Being out of the country can be a valid excuse. There aren;t too many valid excuses. If you're in hospital or out of town or something like that, you apply for an absentee postal vote. If you don't vote and have no valid excuse you get fined big. There are some people who object to having to vote and go along and vote informal (just put in a blank paper or scrawl a note on it).

I can appreciate the arguments of both sides here. In some ways compulsory voting is undemocratic. In other ways it may give a fairer result. I've always felt living in a country which gives me the right to vote at all, is a privilege not shared by many in the world today. And think that one should accept one's Aussie civic duty to vote, and vote the best way one can. (That's just my personal opinion).

LC - I was just cleaning up some old files of my mum's and found a photo of me aged about 3 or 4?. I've copied a recent one into the same frame and blurred it to match... am I still recognisable??? Maybe one should NEVER do this? Grin

you know Pam, i can really see the resemblance and certain qualities you retained! great photos!! i have one of myself at age two, (not in my pc) and all i can notice is big green cat eyes, they never changed. i think your comparison photos are a great idea! my daughter did one of me, herself and her daughter, at approx. the same ages, and they were virtually indistinquishable! ...(and you're very pretty to boot!)

Grin. I don't know about the 'pretty', LC. I think round my eyes is recognisable, and my cheeky grin, probably. And of course the colouring. I like your eyes!... I saw a photo of my Dad as a teenager - and my son at that age, and my sister's son are just so alike!!! It's almost freaky...

Morning all !! And happy birthday tmbsgrl !!! A cake with 5000 candles might be a bit of a challenge, but the FG kitchen staff are working on it. JAB - I have enourmous fun with laksa (especially using chopsticks) - you need to wear a full apron to eat that, and probably take a bath afterwards.
