And fairly common to see, we used to see them in the rock pools at Bass point when we went swimming there. I was trying to find a red back in my garden today so I could take a photo of it.
I have found the book Down Under at the local Libary, I will get it out this week.

I think they have Magpies in England too Alfred, but I can't ride my bike in spring because they keep swooping me. I think Magpie season is over, so if I dare to leave my bedroom again I might get back on my bike:(

Snakes I'm fine with, crocodiles I'm fine with.
Spiders on the other hand, I'm petrified of. It doesn't help coming from the UK where the most danderous animal here is a hedgehog or something where we might get a bit of a prickle off.

I have two pair of SES boot one pair lace ups that I wear all the time, the others are with the elastic in the ankles, I couldn't wear my lace ups the other day as they were wet from flood water so I went to put my others on. There was a lump under the inner sole and so I put my hand in to straighten it and felt a wad of what I though was dirt, I pulled it out and it was a shrivelled up dead mouse, it stunk really bad, I still have to wash my boot out as I just chucked it out the door.

my cat likes to bring home red belly black snakes home 1/2 dead and places them under mums bed - as a gift - my bed sits low so u cant fit underneath it!!! mum hates it she has to get the spade scoop up the snake aand take it outside in a bucket for dad to deal with... if its a dangerous snake we shut the door and scream till someone takes it away.., i hate snakes and freak out real bad... i havent seen many becuase my familiy knows better than to tell me... i really freak out... my son is real calm and just shuts the door...
about two months ago i was at a drags strip (alfred - i was at willowbank) and i went to the car to get money for a drink and a brown snake went in between my legs and under the car. i froze. i couldnt scream or speak properly... i took the phone out of my hand and rang my then partner to get me outta there.... i hate snakes.. he had to leave taking his photos that were to be sold to magazines to rescue me... i was so shaken by the situation i barely could take another photo my hands shook so bad...
i hate snakes...

Sydney - Australia has launched a competition to find a new way of describing kangaroo meat which will be less offensive to diners sensitive about eating the national symbol.
Organisers point out that a slice of cow or pig on a plate is called by the more palatable euphemisms of beef or pork, and want to find a similarly savoury name for cute kangaroos.
Kangaroo meat sales have grown 50-fold in the past decade to create a $200m a year industry, with Europe a major export market for the low-fat red meat and Russians lapping it up in sausages.
But Australians have been reluctant to eat an animal so closely linked to the national identity, and most kangaroo meat consumed locally is in the form of pet food.
The competition to find a new name for the meat has the support of the Kangaroo Industry Association of Australia.
"We don't eat cow or pig - the industry for a long time has been saying why do we eat kangaroo?" said chief executive John Kelly.
The organisers said there were more than 300 words for kangaroo and its meat in Aboriginal dialects and suggested entrants give one of those words a "sexy twist".
Hundreds of names have already been put forward, including "Skippy" (the name of a favourite TV kangaroo character), "Yummy" and "Kanga" - none of which stand a chance of success, the Australian newspaper reported. The industry's national quota for culling kangaroos in 2005 is 3.9 million animals, a number described by some wildlife activists as a cruel slaughter but defended by the industry as necessary to keep down booming kangaroo populations.
