I'm still undecided on strategy. If I don't know the consonants by the third word then I have several times found, even if I know all four other letters correctly placed, that there are three potential words which fit and I'm simply left guessing. That suggests I should be including as many consonants in the first two goes as I can. I'm thinking of, for instance, round pound mound bound found sound wound - how am I meant to get the answer in no more than six tries?

On the other hand, using the highest letter frequencies (etaoin shrdlu) to select the first two words can sometimes hit all five letters and leave a simple anagram for the third guess. That's been my starting place so far, and it's very vowel-centered.

Using the same first two words consistently also avoids a lot of thinking.

good plan, I think
I have, so far, focused on vowels, trying to use as many of them as possible, quickly. then build around the vowels that work.

I focus on consonants, generally use the same two first words, then depending on what's come up I pick out another word from what remains.
I never repeat a letter already used until the fourth go.

I've heard about this but ain't the foggiest how to do it or why. I wouldn't mind having a go, but can somebody explain the whys and wherefors please ?

Good morning Gill. The web page you need is https://www.powerlanguage.co.uk/wordle/

You can enter up to 6 real five-letter words to guess the target word of the day.

For every letter of each guess, you will be told (by its colour) whether it's in the target. Green means it's in the right place, amber means it's in the wrong place. If it's grey you know the letter isn't in the target.

There's only one target each day, so you can't get sucked into playing a second or third time.

When you finish you can click "Share", go to this ForumGarden thread and paste your result. It shows people how many tries you took, like this:

Very rarely there's enough information after two guesses to be correct with the third, but it's not often.

I was watching a colleague play it at work. Isn't it just the game mastermind but with words instead?

It's alike, but with mastermind you were only told how many were in the answer and how many in the correct place. With Wordle you get told which letters they are, as well. It wouldn't be possible to guess correctly otherwise, because there's 26 variants instead of just 10.

Yes but I can't guess where four to six pegs are......but I do have an idea of how words are spelt. So essentially wordle is easier.
