What about pointed sticks? And fingernail clippers? Mine were confiscated while in-transit through Heathrow. And he feigned such exasperation when I questioned him about it! Perhaps he was worried that I'd succumb to the urge and use them as toenail clippers whilst “in flight - and leave the floor untidy?

Totally different rules govern what can be done within the general public environment and what can be done in the specialised environment involved in air travel.
Leaving aside the difference of opinion between the US and the UK over the best form of defence, the only uses for guns and long bladed knives in the public environment are violent, you need to tighten up your definition of a pointed stick before we can comment on your question - for example, does a pencil count?

I wonder what the US and the UK difference in length constitute a "LONG" bladed knife?

Well in the UK it's legal to have a pen knife with a blade up to three inches. In the US it appears (like so much else) to depend which state you're in.

It is I think down to the arresting officer's discretion to a certain extent ?
A Banquet Chef on his way to an off site function in a marquee of perhaps a wedding breakfast carvery would be OK with sharp two feet long knives, while a young lad going into a football match with a safety skill knife with a retractable blade might very well have it confiscated.
I am being silly I know but it does matter.

Certainly, if you can show due cause then you can get away with most things, otherwise how would you ever be able to buy a new kitchen knife and take it home.

Oh. It's not as simple as I thought. I am curious. We often discuss the habit and “right of Americans to bear firearms. I am trying to think of the logic behind knives being restricted in length when hand guns (of any length and calibre) can kill at great distances.

Don't bother. When it comes to the Right to Bear Arms there is no logic. Originally introduced to defend the newly formed independant colony from King George's Redcoats, I don't think they have much to fear from us any more.

Perhaps not, but any day now - there's Richard Branson, Piers Morgan, Russell Howard, Russell Brand ..... Maggie nearly castrated Reagan over the invasion over Grenada.

You are correct.
I have pretty much always carried a "pen knife" 3" blade or less. Never gave it much thought.
Times changed since I was child in school. Today, sure way to get expelled is to have a pen knife.
Who knows how far the nanny state of California has progressed since then.

It is legal in most places around here, but they don't like you to carry them on a plane, or in a lot of courtrooms and other gummint buildings.

You mean they are allowed to carry pen knives into school "these days" ¦.. in addition to the pistol? Imagine that! Even knives! I guess American schools are so chock-a-block with confrontation that you even need to be prepared for “hand-to-hand as well, eh?

I don't know a farmer who doesn't carry one. They are like a swiss army knife without all the fuss.

I expressly forbid the use of any of my posts anywhere outside of FG (with the exception of the incredibly witty 'get a room already' )posted recently.

I don't know a farmer who doesn't own a shotgun. It's a necessary tool for their work. In the U.K., unless you can prove due cause, it is illegal to carry a baseball bat - even in the back of your car. If, however, you have a baseball as well, that is demonstration of due cause inasmuch as you are a baseball player. Otherwise it can be classed as an offensive weapon.

Oh, I see. I am pleased to know that American students are only allowed automatic assault weapons in schools today. Quite an improvement over the pen knives that you use to bring to school wouldn't you say? :wah:

You need to get your eyes checked and go to the humour shop and make a purchase. If you're short on cash you can always point the small end of your assault weapon at the shopkeeper. I hear most of them keep only pen knives as protection. They're so "old school". :yh_rotfl

Or inkwells and quills.

Las Vegas Road Incident
Although not quite in use in the year I entered Secondary School, all the desks still had inkwells, as well as there being a goodly supply of the type of pens that needed to be frequently dipped in the ink. Those things were so sharp they made good little darts that you could literally throw across the room & stick them in a dart board. Basically, just a nib / reservoir concoction with a bit of dowelling pushed into it.

Actually, growing up in Montana, which is largely a wilderness, everyone carried knives all the time, for a variety of reasons. But that was the 70s. NO ONE would EVER actually use a weapon on another person in a fight. To do so in those days was a sure sign that you were a psychopath. It was against the Code of the West, cowardly, and dishonorable to even think of using a weapon on another in a fight.
Even using a gun on someone was only allowed in desperate situations. What's changed in American society is the definition of a desperate situation.

I knew there was something good about you. I've always got on very well with Montanans and Okies.
Yeah, “the definition of a desperate situation. That's it alright. Probable cause.
