In addition to what Betty Boop says about “choosing to be bothered about it... or not the button spares you from reverting to “closing your eyes, putting your fingers in your ears and singing la la la - and it also cuts the page down half so you can get on to input you think worthy of your attention, rather than skimming through.

NOTE. It needn't be someone you dislike who needs to be obscured. I mean, let's say that an old school chum has become such an alcoholic that he sits on the same corner every day, half-conscious, and you've already tried to help him out, to no avail. He doesn't want to be helped. Would you want to see him daily on his collision course with self-destruction? The ignore button can function as “taking another route.

Getting back towards the original point of the post - as we're all aware, Oscar & I were poles apart when it came to our politics & much as I loathe them, I respect & support her right to follow them. However, when not talking politics she could make some extremely interesting posts upon which we had a great deal in common. Now, if I were to have put her on ignore because of her extremist political views, I wouldn't have been able to enjoy the posts she made on other matters either.

That is certainly true. But what if the views you were at odds with were not political but personal, agressive and/or slanderous sort? Would you feel the same way about risking missing the fluffy ones?

Let's keep it straight. We are discussing the merits (or lack of) the "ignore function". Are you really saying that dissimilar veiws on political opinion is the worst it can get?

Closing your eyes to events doesn't make those events go away. That's just the ostrich syndrome.

To Oscar's credit she kept the attacks, on the whole, to the relevant threads - although some threads did get regularly hijacked, but they remained out of the other threads.

If you walk along a pavement with dog crap on it, it may not be pleasant to look at, but by closing your eyes to it you just walk into more of it.

I'm not worried about it. I was having a one-to-one discussion on the merits of the "ingnore" button (NOT on the "ban" of Oscar and Co.) and I feel four-part was speaking at cross-purposes or just simply wasn't making sense. It was he who put Oscar and the "ignore" button on the table together. Perhaps he meant to say "ban" but said "ignore" by mistake?

No - I meant ignore.

To use your metaphor, a ban might be used to remove the undesirable drunkard from the street. To ignore him is to just pretend the problem doesn't exist.

His aim was not to ignore me---it was to TELL ME he is ignoring me, or else he would not have mentioned it twice! in 2 separate threads. Draw your own conclusions, mine is "passive-aggressive."

Well yes, but a BAN is for the benefit of the whole forum, as perceived by admin of course. IGNORE is an independent benefit, as perceived by the individual, naturally.

I agree with you 100% that differences in political opinion or motivation is much too a minor thing to put someone on “ignore, especially when that person is appreciated on other subjects ¦ as you say. Who wouldn't agree with you? But I still maintain that the “ignore function is a blessing for other circumstances. Perhaps we agree on that point as well, and I've only misunderstood you?

What I do not agree with is your own spin on the metaphor: Ignoring a drunk (particularly if you know him personally) is NOT to just pretend a/the/his problem doesn't exist. There are tons of reasons why one might want to ignore a drunk, none (of which I have in mind) would indicate denying or pretending a/the/his problem does not exist.

And then there is the personal or general antagonist, chip-on-the shoulder, stalker, troll, whatever. To put him on “ignore is a wise thing to do, I'd say ¦. or do you feel ignoring your own personal antagonist is to pretend such people do not exist? Surely not.

And I would argue that it's the equivalent of turning your back and walking away from someone when they are insulting and disrespecting you. It's what adults do.

We're all different, of course, so judging one person's coping strategies by your own standards in useless. I know myself, and I know what I'm talking about when it concerns me. I've been banned from this forum before, and some of the people who "helped" me get myself banned are still here and surface every once in a while to take potshots at me. So the ignore feature does what it was intended to do for me.

You said that better than I. And of course, I've already demonstrated to myself that these kinds of people affect me WAY more than is good for me. (Can you imagine staying awake all night stressing over what someone, who is a stranger to you and doesn't even know you, has said online to you? Well, I've done it and it seems to me ridiculous.) Since I can't stop them from saying those hurtful things, and I can't seem to stop myself from reading them, the ignore button seems made to order.

Perhaps that's even why it was invented.

I have an evil suspicion, based on recollections from way back around 2007 or so, that nobody can ignore me.

eta: the *correct* response, just so we're all singing from the same hymn sheet, is "we would not know, John, for it would never have occurred to us to find out".

We are all human beings and have 'coping mechanisms' (not the sort of language I use too often) so if it is good for you......go for it.

To be honest, people have wound me up online, as you say these people are virtual strangers. I always remember what my Father used to say when one of my 2 elder brothers wound me up, and that was to ignore them, they win when you react, you win when you can brush it aside.

As an aside...........seriously how can someone who doesn't know you, insult or disrespect you ? Are you super sensitive ? If you feel they are 'having a go' do a Tude Dog and throw them an enigmatic curve ball (that always stumps me)

Well! I am really, REALLY impressed!:) And I'm flattered too. To answer your question ¦. it's tough, but we're beginning to see light at the end of the tunnel. Saturday's the day but we've been jockeying everything closer and closer to the exit (in order of importance) to make it go as smoothly as possible when I collect the rental van ¦.. and try to beat the clock. Not really, I don't live near there.

If I wanted to go out of the way to spoil a lake the nearest to me is Waconda Lake.

I couldn't imagine in good conscience doing that in a lake where my I let my puppies

I have 2 words of advice for you: 1). Never move flats. 2). Stay young. We got everything shifted now but the flat is up to the rafters in boxes. Trying to find this and that just ain't easy ¦.. if we could just find the most important things! So far nothing broken, but we did foget the thick, plastic, under-the-swivel-chair-to-save-the-woodwork thing in the van and I'll have to dash back this morning and hope it's still there.
