Forum Garden members could try rebuilding the team if there's interest. There'll be several dozen people reading this thread, let's see how many of them we can reel in.
Do you have a desktop computer? Laptops aren't really effective at this.
You do?
Do you leave it turned on all the time and connected to the Internet? Yes? Keep reading.
Are you currently running a background package to make productive use of your spare processor power when you're not using the machine? There are several, some model weather for research, some analyse the Search for Extraterrestrial files for signals. If you already use your spare processor power then good. If you don't at the moment though, consider doing it in this project.
What it involves is downloading the package at http://folding.stanford.edu/English/Download and installing it. It will then run in the background on your computer. When you're doing work yourself it'll stay inactive. When you walk away it'll use the computer to help researchers model genetic expression, something that will give insight into disease.
When you run the install it'll ask you for your team - 36425 - it'll ask you for your username, you know that already. It gives you an option to password protect your name so nobody else can contribute with it, that seems a bit pointless. I suggest you tell it you can run in BIG mode without the advanced options.
I'll come back to the thread and comment on progress if anyone wants to do this. The team was at one point nearing 500th on the league table when it had 25 or so computers active, it's drifted out to position 1604. Shall we aim to break back into three figures to begin with?

I must have a seriously slow system here - estimate it will take 4 days per run unit.
It's currently sitting on 7% complete and getting through 1% per hour.

I've read the whole thread and I understand it's to help beat Alzheimer's and I'm for that but I don't understand a single thing else. I'm thinking there must be others who don't know what all this means either. Could someone please explain in regular terms what you're all doing here and what is required? I would appreciate that and I'm sure others would too. Thanks.

Allowing a program to run invisibly on your computer where it can use the processor whenever you're not using it. You never see it (unless you ask it what it's doing), you never notice it, you never feel your computer's slower because of it. Every day or so it sends back the results of what it's worked out and gets a new question to work on.

Okay....just because I'm a curious sort, what is the program looking for? And everyone who installs the program generates charitable funds by doing so? Is that how it works? I read all of the thread a few times but I was completely lost. All I saw was Alzheimer's and I'll be happy to do something for that cause. Thanks.

The program works out the folded three-dimensional shape of proteins, something that takes a lot of computer time. Once the shape is known it can be compared with the protein's function or allow a protein's function to be predicted. Eventually the research will unlock a better understanding of biological processes.
No charitable funds are generated, merely research information. Running the program means the research team doesn't need to raise millions of dollars in computer resources, the repetitive intensive computing's done by a cloud of internet volunteers.

Okay! I understand now. I had the impression that somehow doing this raised money for research but in fact it saves money instead. Got it. Well if and when it starts up again, I would be happy to install the program. I thank you for explaining it.
