I don't think yopu can blame sarah palin but if she has helped create a climate of fear of violence and one where violent acts on someone with a different viewpoint are acceptable - even just punching someone you disagree with - then she and the tea party do carry some blame imo. Terrorism is not just about actual acts of violence it's also about making people fearful to speak out - try asking someone from Norhern Ireland that was actively involved in the peace movement or indeed whether iain paisley and gerry adams are equally culpable.

You have religious groups in the states that preach hatred is OK and that condone terrorism against anti-abortion clinics, why not blame them?

So does President Obama bear equal blame?

Moot point isn't it? It's perhaps a discussion you need to have, probably be more constructive if you can keep away from I'm right and you're wrong type of arguments. It's a particularly american problem. I notice giffords herself, in that you tube link I posted, refers to it as being from both sides. It's a truism, I think, that if you always speak and act in an aggressive manner you will meet with aggression right back at you. An angry word gets an angry response an incitement to violence or use of violent language by respected individuals will always be taken as sanction of violence by somebody.

Who do you blame for suicide bombers? The bombers themselves, the religious fanatics that persuaded them to do it or the provocation they feel has left them with no choice but to die for god? Would you let them plead insanity? In our culture suicide is not seen as a rational choice in most circumstances.

At the end of the day the one responsible in loughner, why he did it will be interesting to find out. If he pleads insanity and claims right wing rhetoric twisted his mind it should be very interesting.

The leftist lunatic was following the advice of his fearless leader:

If he was a leftist lunatic why didn't he shoot the governer? Did she not allow people to die by withdrawing funding for transplants or something similar? One of the realtives shooting her in revenge would at least have made some kind of sense.

You might disagree but you have no good reason to say they're nutcases. They're just not willing to find common ground with anyone that isn't one of them, a lesson they learn daily from both Democrats and Republicans.

The Westboro Babtist church was doing this long before Obama was elected. They are more anti-homosexual than anything else, they just try to find the most shocking events too spread their anti homosexual propaganda.

I suspect, though I'd not swear to it, that they don't like Commies either.

I don't know, I'd have to check but I have never heard them spew hate about Cuba or China, just Homosexuals. They are a small fringe group just looking for events that are polarizing to spew their anti-homosexual rhetoric.

Westboro Baptist Church: "Thank God for the Great Killer Earthquake" - Shanghaiist

Though I did just correct the Wikipedia article, it originally said "Chinese Communists" but the WBC flyer actually only says Chinese. Wikipedia being where I got the notion that they didn't like Commies. Maybe I did WBC an injustice.

eta: I concede. It's the Chinese woofters they're complaining about...

That's a fairly well-known joke from a movie (just like a wop to bring a knife to a gunfight).

The right wing has been way over-the-top as far as violent rhetoric goes. If you watch fox news, you would think that Obama is a terrorist muslim who's dismantling the constitution. You'd be scared of the republican health care bill, and think that it's a soviet plot. And according to Glen Beck, Obama is also a Nazi. :)

It's physics I suppose. When a person stocks up on ammo and guns, and makes threatening remarks about taking down the government, or joins a militia, they are a freedom loving patriot. But when they actually put their money where their mouth is, and shoot someone, the quantum state collapses and they become a nihilistic leftist.
