Tennessee Fire: Justice or Travesty?

How stupid is the insurance company that they didn't insist he have fire services to qualify. The bank insists that you have house insurance to grant a mortgage... you'd think they'd want to protect their liability.

Out of curiosity, in Canada of course everyone has universal health insurance.

Are fire and trash services also universal services?

I'm not sure. I've never lived in a remote area.

Having no trash service is/was pretty common in the U.S. I live in the second or third largest city in Indiana, and have relatives just a couple miles away that don't have it. They were just outside the city limits, and had to burn their trash or have us pick it up. But just looking at a street, the city/country line isn't really apparent in any visible way. Mostly I think it's just a way to tax people differently, when they have a larger/smaller yard.

What bothers me though, is I think people already pay enough federal taxes to cover all these basic services. I mean, if we can spend over 3 trillion dollars attacking the wrong country, we can take out the trash too.

They are here. You pay for them in your insurance levies and council rates.

"Victoria to scrap fire services levy

Friday, 27/08/2010

The Victorian Government has dumped its controversial fire services levy and will double fuel reduction burns, in response to the Bushfires Royal Commission.

The fire services levy, which funds the Country Fire Authority and the Metropolitan Fire Brigade, has been widely discredited as being unequitable, as it's only paid by those who have insurance. It will be replaced by a property levy in 2012.

The State Government will also spend nearly $400 million on increasing fuel reduction burns to 385,000 hectares a year."

On health grounds if nothing else.

If trash collection is optional then there are those who will opt out.

Their trash will either accumulate and become a health hazzard or they will fly-tip and it will be both a health hazzard and an eyesore.

Here it is a local council service paid for our of the council tax - no reason for it to be a national service, there is nothing federal about it.

The emergency services are also mandatory (Police, Fire, Ambulance and Coastguard - paid out of local tax revenue) so there is no danger of a property being alloed to burn down for non-payment and endangering other life and property as a result.

We have areas where houses are miles apart and people burn their trash.

I agree. As a matter of fact I can't think of an instance where I've ever seen trash cans out by the roads in the country. Burn barrels all the time, not garbage cans or dumpsters unless it's on a business lot.
I expressly forbid the use of any of my posts anywhere outside of FG (with the exception of the incredibly witty 'get a room already' )posted recently.

Folks who'd like to copy my intellectual work should expect to pay me for it.:-6

I sit corrected - it's difficult to realise the effect of having so much space to play with. What is workable here would be totally untenable in the States (and vice versa).
