Pogo is the title and central character of a long-running daily American comic strip, created by cartoonist Walt Kelly (1913–1973) and distributed by the Post-Hall Syndicate. Set in the Okefenokee Swamp of the southeastern United States, the strip often engages in social and political satire through the adventures of its anthropomorphic funny animal characters.

Pogo combined both sophisticated wit and slapstick physical comedy in a heady mix of allegory, Irish poetry, literary whimsy, puns and wordplay, lushly detailed artwork, irresistible characters and broad burlesque humor. The same series of strips can be enjoyed on different levels both by young children and by savvy adults. The strip earned Kelly a Reuben Award in 1951.

As a kid, this was my favorite Popeye cartoon.

I finally found it...in Russian. This was one of my favorite cartoons as a child. It was shown in episodes on "The Garfield Goose Show" with Frazier Thomas in Chicago. I've never forgotten this beautifully presented cartoon.

I look back at this, entertainment which appealed to children and adults.

Back in before the boob tube people would go to movie theaters for news, cartoons and a double feature. All oriented to appeal to the young, old and families.

I believe the quality of cartoons by LOONEY TUNES and others are a direct result of the fact people actually upfront paid for the entertainment.

Ah, how I remember the old Kid's Saturday Matinees. Some old, tired B&W western, followed by some worn out cartoons (I mean physically worn out, as in the quality of the acetate film itself - all scratched & split), followed by either a Batman or Lone Ranger episode, then a few crappy adverts (usually made by the local seller themselves), followed by a full feature - also usually about 15 years old. All for 9d (that's 3.75p to those whippersnappers among you that don't remember Old Money). And no, I'm not exaggerating - that's how much it cost to get in because I remember that with a shilling (5p) I could still afford to get one of those frozen Kia-Ora drink cartons (the patent for which happens to have my Father's name on it btw).

Mind you, the cinema was never run for profit. It was more of a Community thing, run by some Old Dear. I later worked there in the projection room on a voluntary basis, working the old Arc Lamps & such.

Yes. You could come in anytime you turned up and be lead to an asigned seat by an "usherette" (with a hand torch) through the dark. The film was shown twice for the price of a ticket so if you missed the beginning you could sit through to the next showing to see what you missed.

I actually did noticed an Ora about you - but I never suspected it was a Kia. :wah:

Smashing good! But let's face it .... cartoons of that era were for adults. I saw them all when I was a child. For me they were just animals jumping round and speaking in megaphone voices, but it's only as an adult that I can understand the subtleties, realizing that times were hard back then and the population welcomed any excuse to have a laugh.

i miss the imes when i was still a kid. After school, i will throw myself to my grandma couch and watch my favorite cartoons, especially the popeye series while eating of her baked cookies.
