Two more incursions across the border, it seems a popular pastime.
I have a suspicion that life in North Korea is less onerous than Western propaganda makes out. I also wonder what would happen to a citizen of North Korea if he were apprehended having illegally crossed into the USA across the Canadian border.
North Korea says it has detained a US citizen for illegally entering its territory across the border from China.
The official news agency KCNA said the man, who has not been identified, had been arrested on Monday and was now being questioned.
North Korea is currently holding another US citizen, Robert Park.
Mr Park crossed a frozen border river from China on 25 December, to make a protest against repression in the hard-line Communist North.

What are you suggesting would happen?
I suppose it would depend on if it was military personnel, it would be worse than if it was a normal N. Korean citizen.
I suspect the same things that might happen if caught crossing into the USA would be no different than what might happen if caught crossing any number of countries around the world.

I think it would depend on the circumstances to begin with.
What do you suppose would happen to them if they were caught illegally entering Germany, England, Saudi, Australia, etc. etc.?

No more and no less than happens in North Korea, that being the point I started with.

Not entirely - I did say I wondered. The CIA does, after all, use extraordinary rendition of detainees to countries where they can be tortured by non-US nationals, answering questions set by Western intelligence agencies. Depending on why he crossed the US border and who sent him I can easily imagine this hypothetical North Korean ending up in that system. Waterboarding by CIA employees might now be illegal but I don't think, for example, the Egyptian security services are bound by such ethical considerations.

Here we go - six weeks between offence and release. Not bad.
BBC News - Freed US missionary Robert Park leaves North Korea
So - compare with my hypothetical religious fanatic (as this guy was) from within The Axis of Evil, actively avoiding detection and entering the US by way of a closed land border. You think they'd be out and free after just six weeks? I doubt it, personally.

spot: All too often your overload hits my uncertainty. But I don't think you are comparing like with like. North Korea - the Beloved Leader. Fuhrerprinzip by another name. Don't trust the boggers at all. Americans - they generally mean well - heck, as a people they are the most generous you could hope to meet! Bits of their government are arrogant, stupid and complacent. Same can be said of ANY democratic system. It does distress to watch them make exactly the same mistakes as the British Empire did (and more), and the increased speed of time these days means there is less time to recover from those mistakes...
But ambitious journos risking their lives and liberty is what Western Journalism is about - much as our tabloid winkers disprove my point. I'm glad to see two of them risk it, and I hope they are home soon.

Agreed. Totalitarianism makes them dangerous and international isolation makes them crazy. A bad combination.

Gunboat diplomacy. (eg China for Brits, Middle East for the USA)
Assumption that because you are so powerful, you are always right. (Generally true for both!)
Refusal to listen to allies and tendency to downplay their contribution. (eg Brits in Napoleonic Wars; USA in WW2)
No concept of "hearts and minds". (Something the Brits developed through Empire. Because the American Empire is purely economic you don't seem to have picked up on it.)
