It helps if it's possible to know who's won, Carolly. Newspapers don't come up with tables of FG posts with most jokes and no word gaming.

I said earlier, it helps if it's possible to know who's won. I've no idea how anyone would evaluate the winner - everything I've done so far has involved looking up an authoritative announcement. The idea of scoring a contest has its drawbacks in terms of the time it might take. I'm watching but I'm not exactly volunteering so far.

But how's it to be scored? I've no problem with the way you've described it, just with how to handle it. My question's about the mechanism, the process, the step by step workflow to get to a result.

Carolly! How do I score the game!!

One of us is failing to communicate, I'll try using different words if you like but I can't see what I'd do to know who wins.

I'd read that bit. I'm entering unknown territory here but are you suggesting that I get out a pad of paper and manually count the posts - that I have to look at each one in turn, decide whether it's a valid post and make a pencil tick on my score sheet and then add the ticks together at the end?

And that this involves keeping track of which threads are valid threads for the purposes of the contest?

I have the rather horrid reservation that if I make a book on it and offer odds, some slimy critter is going to fix the result to make money out of it. Nobody here is going to fix the result of the Championship League or an entire ITV series - I don't make the same claim about Division Two for obvious reasons, but the Championship is a bit out of ForumGarden's reach.

I could see someone as innately competitive[1] as Kaz betting on someone else to the tune of 10,000 casino dollars and then throwing the contest.

[1] "innately competitive" is a euphemism for something far nastier.

Finding things which are kept adequately under wraps seems more difficult than I'd assumed.

Thank you all and congratulations to those who won, I look forward to any further business you might care to place my way.

You needed to claim, I had no idea who they were except Mister Sulu.

Quite so. I'd assumed it was impossible to drag an unfit desk-bound 68 year old charity activist onto a jaunt like that, it'll teach me to be more cautious in future. I've no idea what the program's about but I'd assumed they had to rough camp with no creature comforts. If that's what they're claiming then take it from me, they're cheating and there's luxury caravans to retire to off-set.

Now, in order to draw up some usable odds I need to know what this godforsaken game's about.

Do the public vote?

Do people resign? Do they get failed by judges?
