I don't mind a proper cider myself. Good stuff. But I haven't had one for a while. There's certainly more real cider (to coin a term) about nowadays. Enough to tempt me back. The 'White Lightning' era had me retching for a while and put me off.

Out of a bottle, I enjoy Marston's Strong Pale ale. Quite smooth for a bottled beer and strong on flavour.
What about yourself?
The Abbott for a good drink but the IPA for a lunchtime session (I'm an Owl, not a Lark).
From the bottle the Pedigree's OK and the St Austell's Smuggler's Ale is better but from the can it has to be the Bass.
From the pump I go for the Old Hookey, Wadsworth 6X, Batemans XXXB, Landlord, Jennings, Old Peculiar .........
I like beer

That's sounds similar to what I generalise as 'White Lightning' cider, Minks. Sickly sweet, full of chemicals, and only sold because it was super high in alcohol content. It was bought by those who didn't care about taste but wanted to get drunk.

I can tell.
I only drink Landlord in London and the surrounding counties. To me, it doesn't suit a head like most beers and as London serves beer without a head, it seems best there.
I rarely drink at lunch time because of my work. But I'm stuck where I live at the moment. All my local pubs only sell that 'smooth' or 'cold' beer. This has an unfortunate medical effect on me and I have already ended up in hospital after drinking a mere 4 pints of smooth beer. So, it's either bottled beer at home or a trip to town. Fortunately, the town centre is only 15 minutes away. Unfortunately, it's a steep climb to get back home. I find it difficult to roll up a hill and usually end up back at the pub.

Tell me what smooth beer is? I have to wonder if it is the same thing we here call draught beer, pumped from a keg with the aid of CO2 ??
HEY Odie good evening I know it's next day but I can't ignore a greeting

Ok. Real ale is kept in a cask, usually a wood cask, in which it finishes fermenting. Keg beer is the one you described. Usually kept in a metal keg and pumped up with CO2. Smooth is a keg, but it has something else added to it. I haven't found out yet what this is.
Smooth beer first appeared over here advertised as beer with a widget. It was first available in cans. Now it's served from a pump as well. It is served very cold.
I will go and have a look now and try and find out more.

Ok. That didn't take long. Try this link -

Basically, smooth beer is keg beer pressurised with nitrogen instead of carbon dioxide.
That gives me serious problems.

That's mostly where I drink the Landlord - there are several pubs in the Aldgate area that serve it. For myself I prefer a pint of beer rather than a quarter pint of froth
I will not drink the nitrokeg beers, they taste awful for one thing. For some reason they appear to have no alcoholic affect on me either. For it to put you in hospital it must be a fairly severe reaction but I cannot see that you're missing out by having to avoid the rubbish
Once I've left a pub I'm out - my problem is saying fair thee well to my mates and getting out of the door in the first place. Good job I don't go to the pub very often then :wah:

In Hertfordshire and Bedfordshire, where I have lived most of my adult life, the beer has a bit of a head, usually about 1/4". Or, the pub may have over-pint glasses with the beer up to the pint line and froth above. Up north here, they seem to think the froth is an important part of a beer and laughed at me when I kept insisting on a small head of froth. "They like it flat down south" they would say. Shows how much they know about beer. I believe, however, the law allows 10% head to a beer.
The only reason I would drink nitrokeg beer if was if I was with a party of non-real ale drinkers in a pub with no real ale. Needless to say, I don't touch the stuff now. Either my party goes to a pub that sells real ale, or I'm out off the party. Fortunately, there's no shortage of real ale pubs (or breweries) up here. (Except for my locality that is.)

You notice that after years of Muphey's doing a Red, Guinness have just started advertising one?
The old Milk Stouts have all but disappeared nowadays and I don't think the Irish Stouts they serve over here are a patch on the real thing in Ireland.

I had a nice winter ale yesterday. Damned if I can remember the brewer. It's 4.9 proof. Dark bodied with nutty and berry flavours. Very nice and available at Mr Foleys in Leeds.
