I'm not sure what the penpal communication means? Will I send and receive secret emails from a perfect stranger or something? Will I have to ask and answer twenty questions? It's all so mysterious!
Why not get to know everyone on the forumgarden instead, just the way it is? Please help me understand how going email or pm contributes to more authentic relationship building in this context. It's all virtual communication anyway.
Am I sounding negative right now? Please comment; I welcome the input. Just not sure how this penpal thing works? Personally at this time I don't feel too close to anyone because I haven't made the effort to be sincere, be consistent in my interactions or involved in the stuff that makes closeness possible-like small talk. Does email do that? Make one real on the internet?
I believe most people, when they spend enough time with each other, will sort out who they have stuff in common with and develop deeper friendships as a result. I'm not sure it's necessary to assign penpals to people and go underground. I infer people already communicate with others they have developed friendships with, offline or through other channels, on their own.
Not sure I should click the submit button, but here goes...
Erin :-6
Hello Erin,
I think it would be fairly impossible to get to know every person on FG since there are so many. I've been here three years and there are people I still don't know mainly because neither I nor they have made any effort to change that. That could be because we don't care for each other or it could be because of the tendency of people to fall into little groups or cliques of their own and then they never branch out to meet new people.
You ask if email makes one real on the net. No it won't. Only effort and sincerity will do that.
The idea only occurred to me when I was looking at the home page and saw all those names I see every day, yet know not who those people are. I thought maybe others might feel the same way.
My idea was in no way intended to suggest we "go underground" and form little private groups or anything like that, if it sounded that way. I don't like that stuff myself. But someone who liked the idea, picked me as someone they would like to know better and we've been sending PMs back and forth. I'm learning some nice things about her and it's fun. She's someone who is on daily yet I never took the time before to know anything about her. I might have missed out on knowing a very cool person!
It was just an idea, Erin. Nobody has to do it if they don't want to.:-6

Yes i think its a good idea too:D i for one usually stick to certain threads, so therefore miss out on talking and meeting with quite a lot of members on here( and yes i know thats my own fault),, but i have often seen posts from People who i dont talk to much and vice versa, and think oh they sund interesting, and i bet it would be interesting to find out more about that person, you just never know how much you may have in common, or how well you would get on with someone even though you dont usually frequent the same type of threads.

Im in, feel free to PM me. My course finishes in two weeks so I'll have much more time then.
Yes you can make some really great real friends on here, having been to meets and kept in contact with some of them since, it's easy to sort out the genuine people. Just as in real life you can meet shady people anywhere, you can also meet good lifelong supportive friends :-6

Count me in too!
I have one Pen Pan friendship with a member here. She sends me at least one Lovely E-mail almost every week. :-4 And I send her one.
I'm always so busy doing this or that. I don't get a chance to get in to the Garden as much as I'd like to. And I know that is the reason I feel like I don't fit in. I've always been a little shy. And don't like to draw attention to myself. That's why this time, like the last time I was here ,I don't start my own threads. I usually just tag a long with something that catches my eye. I would like to get to know more people. If only I could make myself get out of my shell.
I'm working on it!

Maybe they think they know you so well already and the idea was to get to know people you don't know very well.
Or maybe they'd just think you'd be boring, you're so shy, untalkative and reserved. :p

Oh I can't blame you, sure has been a lot hotter lately, definately the kind of weather that you expect for June, obviously not my cup of tea, but most people enjoy it hehehe. Though with it brings all the nasty bugs (something that I hate, more than anything in the world, which says something!) I can't tell you how many flies we have had buzzing in and out the house, silly things!!

Ah you hate them too, real pains aren't they!! :-5
My parents like to keep the windows open to try and cool the house down, and as always the stupid flies will come in and buzz around, and take ages until you can get them out again! Very frustrating indeed, no wonder I prefer the cooler weather!

Absolutely!
If I even open the kitchen just to walk out to the laundry room, a swarm of maybe 4 or 5 will fly right on in. Flies are disgusting!
