There's always got to be one who will pose a hypothetical like this

Peg, you and I have been around before, so I'm not even going to answer this one. You know animals are just as important to me as humans, and I know they come second rate to you. So let's not go there again.

i wouldn't want either one of the them to get shot but the eithical choice would be the dog. they are put on this earth for humans to take care of and give a good life. but you cannot compare the value of a human life to that of a dog. no matter how you argue it.

Well Peg, if you knew what I had said, then why did you bother asking again?

Seems to me like you would like to stir things up again and I just can't be bothered.

There's always some individual who will take an animal discussion and pose a "which would you save?" question just for kicks. It's old.

What it says it that it's a stupid question and I am not answering it because I don't feel like an argument today. Why I should be expected to explain my convictions to you or anyone else, is beyond me. I haven't tried to change your mind about the way you feel so what's your game here, Peg? You seem argumentative today.

I think it's sad that you seem to be trying to reduce the actual discussion we were having about police dogs into a hypothetical argument. I said my piece, how I felt, and I was done. So where have you been before this Peg? I thought you would have been here before now. :)

You may say that Weber, but your passive-aggressive manner belies you.

If you want to feel you're more important than God's other creatures, I don't think anyone here is out to change your mind and you sure aren't changing mine. I remember the religious poem you posted not long ago in the "spanking" thread about the Shepherd breaking the little lamb's leg and how you said it was *cute.* Some of us will never forget that. After all, God commanded us to steward the animals.

Oh my, I don't remember saying that poem was cute. I know I said it reminded me of me, I think hmmmmm my memory is not so clear so long. If I offended anyone with that, I am sorry. And I ain't never gonna say I am sorry in this place ever again. And I still think it is a beautiful poem story and whoever wrote it obviously thought so too and whoever printed it thought so too. Afraid that I don't get the drift you're at.

Oh, it's the breaking of the lamb's legs that bothered you. That is just a parable or allegory or euphamism for getting people to know God better by being dependent on Him.....or whatever/whoever you know as a supreme power. It was not meant to be taken literally.

I hurt many people with that eh. Maybe the whole entire forum. WOW.....done in by a poem. Be careful Red.

I have thought long and hard about this before posting

I believe that in most circumstances, animal life deserves the same consideration as human life.

Yes, humans can decide what line of work they want to go into. Dogs can not.

But here is the rub. For years, the breeds used by our police departments have been specially bred to do what it takes to work with our police departments. They do things that no human can do - sniffing out bombs, drugs, weapons, corpses, and fleeing suspects. Without these dogs to do these jobs, criminals would roam free, commiting more crimes and hurting more people. Without bomb dogs, bombs would go off killing untold hundreds.

It is tragic when a police dog is killed or wounded in the line of duty. I have never heard of a police dog passing away and not getting the same honors as a fallen human officer. They are treated like the heroes that they are.

But to say that the life of a dog (or any other animal is more important then a human life is going a bit too far - IMHO. If my house caught on fire and I had to chose between saving my child or saving my dog - I would save my child.

Hey, LC, maybe you can help me out with this one. I do not have an issue with the K-9 patrol out there. They do serve a valuable purpose, and are well trained to work well with thier handlers.

But...are they given any sort of, I don't know how to put this, de-tox, or whatever when they are retired from the force, to calm down some of the aggression that they are trained for. In other words, are they helped in thier transition from work to retirement....and helped to learn to just be a dog?

I remember once when I had to call the police when my car was vandalized. The cop who responded had a K-9 partner. When the cop went back to his car to write up the report, for my insurance, I just leaned in the door to talk with the officer. Just this act caused the dog to go on alert and growl at me. His handler said not to worry, the dog would relax as soon as he saw I was not a threat.

I was not concerned, as the dog was doing his job...but I wonder how much "untraining" needs to be done?

Police dogs are some of the happiest dogs I have ever seen...

I don't much think just because a dog is a police dog, they cease being a dog...That's like asking what a football player does after retirement when all along his dad wanted him to be a football player...know what hes doing?...he's sipping margaritas in the Bahamas with that multi million dollar bank account and a dog dish filled to the rim. :-6

A dog that may seem protective in his own space (like the one in the vehicle you saw) is not unusual behavior for any dog, trained to be a police dog or not. I see a lot of dogs when I'm at shows that may act aggressive when inside their crate that wouldn't think of acting that way out of it. Otherwise, they couldn't be a show dog. They have to allow all kinds of strangers to touch them and check their bite and all their parts in determining their conformation. I have known a retired police dog and he was just like any other dog, very good natured:-6

Let's not go through this again. Cher, please don't speak for me although I know you mean well. :) I meant what I said. I put animal life right next to human life on an equal scale. I don't particularly care if anyone finds that offensive or hurtful, as that person probably doesn't care that I am offended or hurt that they think human life is somehow worth more than another of God's creatures who did not ask to be "a police officer." I don't care about posthumous honors or any of that rigamarole and I doubt the dead dog cares either.

She didn't say rather, she said equally,..only rather in the case of the dog being sacrificed unnecessarily, and I think that dives into opinion upon such judgement.

I have two ex-K-9's... they are incredibly gentle and intelligent, yet I know they'd give their life to protect me, as I would them. I also have a lil' Parson Jack Russel Terrier and I'm certain she'd also do the very same.

I'm certain most pet owners consider their pets as a part of the family... to lose one is like losing a family member... to others an animal statistically is considered to have a value less than that of a human... I'd say that most feel that way.

Are you to rying to make this into an argument? We've already had one over this thread. You can dissect what I said any way you want to and you can feel about my opinion any way youw ant to. I am not retracting what I said. The cop can choose to be a cop. The dog is trained to do what he does and I don't care how willingly he dives into a house with a gunman in it or what the scene is, he did not sign up for that and I don't think his life is any less important than that of a human. Period. Your kids missing you does not make the dog any less worthy. Sure you matter. But the dog matters too, just as much in my eyes. Now flame away.

You are truly one of the most assinine posters I have encountered on any internet message board since I got the internet back in 95. How any sane person on this board could try to align themselves with your viewpoint is shocking.

If I have to swerve into/over a dog to avoid hitting a kid in the street on my way to work tomorrow I hope it's one of yours and I also hope that if you are ever unfortunate enough to be trapped under the rubble of a burning building that the S&R dog walks right on by you.
