Let me try to explain it using short words. Every time I try doing this I get spat at for insulting peoples' intelligence but even so it's worth trying....

... So - conclusion - with clean family genetics, there's no biological problem in first cousin marriages. With genetic editing, when it arrives, that can fix these diseases whenever they show up, again it's no longer a biological problem. Until then, random mutations will bring the diseases back into existence in every generation - it's where these genetic-inherited diseases come from in the first place - and some marriages will randomly bring two recessive carriers together anyway.


Good summary. The only thing I'd pick you up on is that there isn't really such a thing as 'clean genetics'; we all carry some form of deleterious recessive mutions (by their very nature they are difficult for natural selection to work upon). As such, the offspring of close relatives will always have a higher risk of abnormalities, regardless of how many common loci they are screened for.

The other funny thing about inbreeding is that it isn't so much the level of inbreeding that causes the risks (in fact, we are all completely inbred if you look back over enough generations), it is the rate at which inbreeding accumulates. Mating between close relatives (in humans at least) causes a very rapid accumulation of inbreeding, which is why it causes problems.

I live in a small village with around 2000 people an marring you cousin has happened.I think if it is a third cousin there would not be a problem(with the children that is) but first cousins, you are looking for trouble.One family I know are first cousins and have three children.The children are all challenged.There oldest son is my sons age and they went to school together.It did not take him long to start failing.Now he is no longer in school( he is only 16) I think the children are the ones to suffer.I personally don't agree with cousins getting married for reasons other than the children(it's just plane Gross)but if two cousins feel they want to get married they should think of the children.Maybe adopt.
