"Little larger than anticipated" is congratulatory - aren't we good with our initial estimate, the actual figure is little larger than anticipated, the final bill has gone up by a mere 3%.
"A little larger than anticipated" is apologetic - our initial estimate was too small, the actual figure is a little larger than anticipated. The Channel Tunnel estimate, the Second Severn Crossing, the Humber Bridge, the Iraq war... the final bill is ten times what we announced in Parliament when seeking approval.

It's not only the wording that changes the meaning in English (and quite possibly in other languages as ell), but the emphasis on certain words. For instance (and you may have already seen this before, but it's still a good example), read the following sentence over & over again, putting emphasis on each word in turn each time you read it:
I never said she stole my money!
I never said she stole my money!

Sure but what I didn't put clearly was that, that sentence, when using those seven words in that order, can mean seven different things and only the writer can possibly know what it's intention is. No amount of punctuation helps. The spoken word, however would make it very clear.

Ever since the 18th century, any reader would immediately know the intended written meaning if one word were italicized. That was the convention then and it still works.

This is an intolerably misleading link, given the circumstances and the argument over the purpose of the £3m government grant... Kids Company donor 'withdrew £3m'.
The entire point of the story is that the donor *didn't* withdraw £3m, and the confusion between that £3m and the government £3m which *was* withdrawn is outrageous.
The charity appears to have been totally stitched up, and this BBC link is nothing less than an implied slur of criminality and depends for its excuse on the two discrete meanings of the word "withdrew", one a banking term and the other "stepped back from". It's a shameful manipulation of the story by the BBC.

I do not understand the meaning of the word "lands" in this context. Perhaps someone would explain how a dead - and therefore passive - person can "land" anything.. We could watch the Chinese get there and we can watch the Russians, and leave the Western world in the decline, and I don't really think anyone wants to see that".
How on earth does the BBC translate what was actually said into this screaming xenophobic Daily-Mail-style tabloid "'West must beat China to Mars'"? It's a grotesque distortion of the content of the interview.
I am justifiably appalled at the utter lack of honesty in that link. The BBC's standards are at rock-bottom.

I couldn't agree more. Interpretive para-phrasing should never be presented as a quote.
From its initial establishment, the BBC has been the Zenith of Broadcasting Standards - that by which the rest of the world would calibrate its own performance standards. In the past few years, however, it has sunk, and continues to sink to a new low, yet we are still obliged, by law, to fund it by way of the TV Licence (whether you have a TV or not, because if you have access to the Internet you have the ability to watch live television transmissions - even if only on a Smart Phone). I have always believed this to be a disgrace. It is, in my opinion, an illegal Monopoly. The BBC is NOT a public service - it is a Profit-Making Corporation. The difference is that if it were any other Government run utility, the franchise would have been put out for tender long ago, and going by their declining standards, they probably wouldn't stand a chance of keeping it.

Cobblers, you demented pack of sensation-seekers. That building dates from 1974! It is not an Anglo-Saxon house, it never was an Anglo-Saxon house, it is what we in the trade call a REPLICA.
You are cheating, BBC. Your links are deliberately sensationalist, misleading and untrue. You are no different from the Sun, the Mail, the Mirror or the Express in this regard.

We British removed the Ottomans from power, and not before time either. The Sublime Porte had been a piratical blot on the Mediterranean landscape since the Middle Ages.
We could compromise by saying "US involved in Middle East violence"? - it removes the paternalist implication of oooh none of it was little old USA but they do think you Middle Easterners are behaving badly which screams out of the actual BBC link.

It has a context. World War One. The Ottoman Empire, you'll remember, had joined the Axis Powers and lost the war. An internal movement led by Ataturk overthrew the Ottomans from within Turkey and established a new secular republic over the ruins of the collapsed government.
I'm all in favour of any country determining its own destiny through an internal political process. I object to so-called regime change by foreign destabilization. The UK didn't order the Ottoman Empire to fight alongside its traditional enemy, the Austro-Hungarian Empire - that was just a poor decision by the Porte and brought about its downfall. The internal Turkish rebellion which brought it down was fallout from losing the war, not British interference in the internal affairs of a Middle Eastern State.

Drone crashes into Wallace Monument - BBC News
What?
"Built-up area"?
"Crowds"?
This is the Wallace Monument we're discussing! It's in the most isolated part of the United Kingdom and in mid-October at 4.30pm it is practically deserted.
What does it take to get a thought-out comment from police officers instead of knee-jerk twaddle.

No no - you fail to adequately comprehend. The police claim this specific event as "an example of the risks of flying drones in crowded or built-up areas", which by virtue of its location it blatantly cannot be. It is like - I invent the following scenario, you understand - "the mugging of this hill-walker in the wilds of the Caledonian Forest, five miles from the nearest habitation and on a day when nobody in their right mind would be on the hills unless they were a sheep in the most robust health and condition, is an example to pedestrians not to walk through New Cross on a Saturday at 3am when the clubs are closing".
