While writing about my experience driving in a terrific thunderstorm, it reminded of an exceedingly traumatic occurence which happened in the late 70s. There again it was on a night when I had a gig, this time in south Leicester. When I drove to the gig it was raining and there was quite a wind, so I drove fairly sedately. The weather forecast had warned of fairly high winds due overnight, so I wasn't too worried because I would be finished my gig and safely home.

We played the gig, and were packing our gear up at the end when somebody said there was a helluva wind blowing outside ! Sure enough, we battled against the wind to load the vehicles, and it took longer than usual fighting the wind, and at that point the lashing rain. We all lived in different directions, so we couldn't drive in a convoy to look out for each other - so off we went, carefully. It was about 1.00 am as I made my way cautiously into the centre of Leicester. The high wind had arrived early, and although it was a Saturday night/Sunday morning, the streets were almost deserted, there was the occasional car but no people walking on the pavements. The wind was buffeting my Morris 1000 Traveller (half timbered car - to any Aussies, or Americans !), and I had to be very alert to sudden gusts pushing me from the sides. I was amazed to see that the wind had blown the traffic lights right round so they were no longer facing the appropriate lanes of traffic (what traffic !), so I slowly battled my way across these junctions. Road signs were drunkenly swaying, there was a street light still connected to it's cables and lying across the pavement, and I thought crikey that could be dangerous, as it was still 'live' and sparking. There were shop awnings ripped away from their anchor points and flapping madly. Solid things, I couldn't tell what, were being hurled across the road in front and behind me. God this was frightening ! If one of those big metal road signs comes adrift, the wind could easily carry it like a discus and it would slice my car and me in half ! I suddenly felt very alone, and terribly vulnerable, I just had to get out of these buildings. I gripped my wheel very tightly against the buffeting and pressed on at a very cautious 15-20 mph. Another car came out of a side road ahead of me, also very cautiously, it was a taxi and I can remember thinking 'you poor sod, you've got to work in this stuff and get people home safely, all amongst these buildings !'

I pressed on, carefully picking my way round rolling dustbins and other unidentified objects that were littered about the road. It seemed to take ages to reach the north side of Leicester and the less hazardous open dual carriageway. I thanked God that my son was sleeping at my mother's house, and my husband was on night duty. There was nobody at home to worry about my late arrival. I reached the A46 (Fosse Road) and pressed on northward, but I still had nearly 20 miles to drive before I could relax at home. There was absolutely nothing on the A46 in either direction - sensible people. I drove in the outside lane all the way along, to keep as far away as possible from roadside trees, road signs etc, and to give me as much warning as possible of any missiles flying across from my left, because that was the direction this violent wind was coming from. It was the most terrifying drive I have ever done, I knew that at any moment a huge roadside metal sign could come crashing across the road at me, and what chance would I have of avoiding it ! I could see to my left amazing pink and blue flashing explosions, illuminating the angry night sky, fortunately they seemed quite distant and I can remember hoping that nobody was getting hurt.

I turned off the main road eventually and drove slowly down the lane to my village, half way down the hill I had to navigate carefully round a fallen tree, then as I approached another rise in the lane I saw poles and wires all over the road. For the first time in my journey I stopped. I looked very carefully at these cables and wires through my windscreen, tracing them back to their pole. I realised, with relief, that they were telegraph poles and not electricity, so without getting out of my car I carefully picked my way through to the clear lane beyond. I thought, well that's my phone out of action for the foreseable future! As I drove up the main village street, I saw roof tiles shattered all over the road, branches, bins, even small barrels rolling to and fro. With a great sense of relief and achievement I turned into my gateway, stopped the car, thanked it very much for getting me home, turned off the engine and glanced around. The newly built house at the back of our back garden had lost most of it's ridge tiles and some roof tiles, the house next door had a small tree down, and the wind had not abated one bit. Our old cottage showed no damage at all. I just sat for a moment with relief, then I unloaded all my gear into the cottage for safety, just in case the chimney should come down on my car - I had another gig the next day ! I knew Chris would be OK coming home, he was driving our LWB Landrover ! That journey, which would normally take about an hour, took me nearly two and a half hours, and boy was I knackered!

They admitted in the following day's weather forecast that winds of up to hurricane force had been experienced in some parts of the country !!

Can't find me 'driving in a thunderstorm' story anywhere ! Has somebody pinched it ? Any way I don't want you to miss it so I'll post it again ! :-5

Now this following 'story' is perfectly true, but is so amazing, it is difficult to believe ! When you've read it perhaps you have had a similar experience, or you may know somebody who has, well maybe you could tell us about it.

Many years ago I used to play electric guitar and sing in a band, playing at gigs in Leicestershire, Nottinghamshire, Lincolnshire and Derbyshire. One night we had a gig at Stamford in Lincolnshire which finished at midnight, so by the time we'd packed all our gear into our cars and changed from our stage clothes it was nearly 1.00 am before I set off home. It was a really foul night weather wise, the Heavens had opened and the rain was like a tropical monsoon. I came out of Stamford and got onto the A1 northbound, there was nobody else in the car. I turned off the A1 onto the A52 at Grantham and travelled towards Nottingham. At this point a terrific thunderstorm had developed, and there was so much lightning that the darkness of the night was turned into constant daylight. The rain was still torrential and my speed was no more than 35 mph, it just wasn't safe to go any faster. I thought ' well I ain't going to get home till nearer 2.30 am at this rate ' so i settled down for a slow drive home. The whole spectacle of the storm was truly amazing. There was very little traffic on the road which was a relief, but, as the road was swimming with water, I was gripping the wheel fairly strongly just in case I hit a disguised puddle and it tried to pull my wheels. I had just gone through a village called Elston and was running down a long straight piece of road. The lightining was flashing constantly still and the thunder was dreadfully loud, and I was glad there was no traffic and no headlights to add to my problems. Suddenly there was an indescribably bright flash immediately to my left with an instantaneous huge crash of thunder - 'God that was close !' . My steering wheel never moved an inch and my grip on the wheel was still just as strong. To my horror I was driving on the wrong side of the road ! Thank God there was nothing coming the other way ! I steered back to the correct side of the road, and my knees started knocking - how the hell did that happen? A moment later an articulated lorry came round the curve at the bottom of this straight and headed towards me - if he'd been 10 secs earlier, there would have been a head-on and instant stopping at a closing speed of 75-80 mph doesn't leave much of a car or the occupant when it hits a lorry!

I was told later on that it is possible for a lightning strike as close as that must have been to my car would be quite capable of pushing a moving solid object sideways particularly as the surface of the road gave no resistance due to the water on it. What a terrifying thought! We're all told that lightning doesn't strike a moving object, and in any case when you are in a vehicle you are insulated by the tyres. But, it seems, you are not totally safe when you are driving in a thunderstorm, so just be alert and cut your speed right down.

Probably won't be on over the weekend either, there's nobody to talk to ! I really don't want to be taken away by funny little men in white coats - talkin to myself.

I know Helen is having difficulty with her internet connection, Kaz is on holiday, Joan is on holiday, not sure where Neffy is, not sure where Kay is, or Ali or anybody else, except Carol is in and out and I don't think she knows where she is pmsl .

It's bloody lonely here. I'm going to watch TV and talk to my dog, and make a cup of tea, well it's a mug actually.

If I ramble on for a bit somebody may just join me here ! There's nobody on MSN either. Is everybody on holiday, or have they all drowned in the rain?:-1:-5

Well hope you're all OK ! Not drowned I trust

Just popped on to say Helen is having troubles. Her landlady has disconnected her router connection. Helen doesn't have a landline so is dependant on her landlady's landline for her internet connection. Just don't know what that landlady is trying to do FFS. Some people can be extraordinarily mean don't you think ?

Sorry Helen for putting this on here. I'll delete it if you want me to. But I feel so angry that some people can be so miserable towards others, when they don't deserve it. Helen hasn't got a nasty bone in her body, and I wish I lived nearer to Cornwall. Praps it's just as well I don't else I would get arrested for what I would do.

People should be nicer to each other, life is far too short.

Hi everybody, hope you are surviving the tropical monsoon weather !

Thought you might like to read the following, it may bring a smile, but then maybe it won't because the sad thing is - it is true !!!!! God save us from such pathetic madness !!! Of course most of it is caused by the UK being in the EU and being governed by un-elected wallies ! (I hasten to add that this is my personal opinion and does not necessarily reflect the opinions of anybody else)

Subject: What a Nation we have become!

Nelson: "Order the signal, Hardy."

Hardy: "Aye, aye sir."

Nelson: "Hold on, that's not what I dictated to Flags. What's the meaning of this?"

Hardy: "Sorry sir?"

Nelson (reading aloud): "'England expects every person to do his or her duty, regardless of race, gender, sexual orientation, religious persuasion or disability.' - What gobbledegook is this?"

Hardy: "Admiralty policy, I'm afraid, sir. We're an equal opportunities employer now. We had the devil's own job getting 'England' past the censors, lest it be considered racist."

Nelson: "Gadzooks, Hardy. Hand me my pipe and tobacco."

Hardy: "Sorry sir. All naval vessels have now been designated smoke-free working environments."

Nelson: "In that case, break open the rum ration. Let us splice the main brace to steel the men before battle."

Hardy: "The rum ration has been abolished, Admiral. Its part of the Government's policy on binge drinking.

"Nelson: "Good heavens, Hardy. I suppose we'd better get on with it, full speed ahead."

Hardy: "I think you'll find that there's a 4 knot speed limit in this stretch of water."

Nelson: "Damn it man! We are on the eve of the greatest sea battle in history. We must advance with all dispatch. Report from the crow's nest please.

"Hardy: "That won't be possible, sir."

Nelson: What?"

Hardy: "Health and Safety have closed the crow's nest, sir. No harness, and they said that rope ladders don't meet regulations.

They won't let anyone up there until a proper scaffolding can be erected."

Nelson: "Then get me the ship's carpenter without delay, Hardy."

Hardy: "He's busy knocking up a wheelchair access to the fo'c'sle, Admiral."

Nelson: "Wheelchair access? I've never heard anything so absurd."

Hardy: "Health and safety again, sir. We have to provide a barrier-free environment for the differently abled."

Nelson: "Differently abled? I've only one arm and one eye and I refuse even to hear mention of the word. I didn't rise to the rank of admiral by playing the disability card."

Hardy: "Actually, sir, you did. The Royal Navy is under represented in the areas of visual impairment and limb deficiency."

Nelson: "Whatever next? Give me full sail. The salt spray beckons."

Hardy: "A couple of problems there too, sir. Health and safety won't let the crew up the rigging without hard hats. And they don't want anyone breathing in too much salt - haven't you seen the adverts?"

Nelson: "I've never heard such infamy. Break out the cannon and tell the men to stand by to engage the enemy."

Hardy: "The men are a bit worried about shooting at anyone, Admiral."

Nelson: "What? This is mutiny!"

Hardy: "It's not that, sir. It's just that they're afraid of being charged with murder if they actually kill anyone. There are a couple of legal-aid lawyers on board, watching everyone like hawks."

Nelson: "Then how are we to sink the Frenchies and the Spanish?"

Hardy: Actually, sir, we're not."

Nelson: "We're not?"

Hardy: "No, sir. The French and the Spanish are our European partners now. According to the Common Fisheries Policy, we shouldn't even be in this stretch of water. We could get hit with a claim for compensation."

Nelson: "But you must hate a Frenchman as you hate the devil."

Hardy: "I wouldn't let the ship's diversity co-ordinator hear you saying that sir. You'll be up on disciplinary report."

Nelson: "You must consider every man an enemy, who speaks ill of your King."

Hardy: "Not any more, sir. We must be inclusive in this multicultural age. Now put on your Kevlar vest; it's the rules. It could save your life"

Nelson: "Don't tell me - health and safety. Whatever happened to rum, sodomy and the lash?"

Hardy: As I explained, sir, rum is off the menu! And there's a ban on corporal punishment."

Nelson: "What about sodomy?"

Hardy: "I believe that is now legal, sir."

Nelson: "In that case............................... kiss me, Hardy."

Next time you use a pair of rubber gloves you can remember this.. A

dentist noticed that his next patient, a little old lady, was nervous so he

decided to tell her a little joke as he put on his gloves. "Do you know how

they make these gloves?" he asked. "No, I don't," she replied. "Well," he

spoofed, "there's a building in Mexico with a big tank of latex and workers

of all hand sizes walk up to the tank, dip in their hands, let them dry,

then peel off the gloves and throw them into boxes of the right size." She

didn't crack a smile. "Oh, well. I tried," he thought. But five minutes

later, during a delicate portion of the procedure, she burst out laughing.

"What's so funny?" he asked. "I was just envisioning how condoms are made!"

Gotta watch those little old ladies! Their minds are always working

Hello everybody ! The sun's out where I am - wow ! Hope the sun's out where you are LOL

Hi Neffy! Glad you could pop in, even though it wasn't for long !

Hi Kay! Hope you get more sleep with your new charge !

Hiya Carol, good to see you, and enjoyed our chat last night! Hope you can get on again today Mrs Posh.

Hello Abbey ! I guess you've noticed that I've waved the white flag, and bowed to your superiority in the Arcade. Still I did manage to get to be the gold cup holder and the leader of the leaderboard ! Well I've done that so I can play my favourites now ! LOL

Helen, You managed a brief post on here last night, and I enjoyed our short chat on MSN, before your plug was pulled again ! I just wonder who is actually pulling your plug Helen - female or could it be a young male ? Or maybe even an older male ? What the f...k is wrong with some people - it just gets to me this kind of nastiness - it verges on mental abuse ! I wonder what their hidden agenda really is. Helen remember to work to rule, cos they just can't have their cake and eat it.

Joan is due back today, so in case she comes on the thread, welcome back Joan, hope you enjoyed your holiday ! I bet you're champin at the bit now to go and collect your gorgeous little Sophie !

xxx :-4 TO ALL

Hello everybody ! Hey it's sunny here today !

Hi Carol, enjoyed our chat last night matey. Loved the 'roof' words, Andy's still laughing !!!

Abbey, thanks for the compliment that you consider me competition, particularly as you're a helluva player in the Arcade ! It looks like I've got a lot of work to do to try and catch you again, so maybe I'd better set aside some time ;)

Neffy I hope you can throw off that grotty head cold soon matey !

Abbey, with Carol around, you really will have to watch what you write, cos if the wrong meaning can be taken, Carol will take it :wah:
