The best part of three months later with all the witness statements and forensic evidence and the questions are still unanswerable.
How could the attending officer know the best course of action ?

I'm describing it as a structural issue, you're saying I describe it as a personal choice.

By applying some degree of compassion, how else? By not escalating to death. I'll say it once more, the bugger had a nightstick and knew how to use it. Even if it *risked* death it's a hell of a sight less lethal than his sidearm. He could have non-lethally stopped what was happening in moments had he chosen. He had a duty of care to both people. The fact that he actually shot both is just icing on his personal incompetence.

My assessment of your opinion is not based only on this thread, but on many posts from you about both police and the armed forces, and personal choices.
(And no I can't be bothered looking em up)

What did I just hear on the radio? A chap outside the Empire State Building shot an ex-work-colleague?
Scorecard so far: Gunman: 1 (dead victim); Police: 1 (dead perpetrator), 9 (injured onlookers, indiscriminately sprayed with bullets by New York's Finest).
Do they never take exams, these officers?

Mr Poppo is going to give a news conference from Florida about a shooting in NYC?

No, he's going to give a press conference about the events which led up to his being shot by an officer of the Florida police.

Which would be on topic and a welcome addition to this thread. Your comment about NYC cops shooting civilians is not.

In any rational non-militarized country the police are considered civilians too, you know.
I reckon police shooting bystanders is close to on topic. There are, I agree, several alternative threads I could have added to and retained topicality.

For all those thinking what cobblers, he makes these things up...All nine people injured in Friday's Empire State Building shooting were hurt as a result of police fire, New York's police chief has confirmed.
BBC News - New York police injured Empire State bystanders
Bloody incompetent wallies, every last of them. If you disarmed every uniformed policeman in New York City[1] they might revert to policing instead of posturing.
eta [1]: and, looking at the thread title, Florida.
And, just to add to what I've said throughout this thread about lying pro-police misinformation immediately hitting news outlets on occasions like these, the BBC at the time was parroting:Panic erupted outside New York's Empire State Building on Friday when a gunman began to shoot people at random during rush-hour.
[...] Aliyah Imam told Fox News TV she was waiting at a red light when a woman standing next to her suddenly fell to the ground. She said the woman had been hit in the hip. The gunman was "shooting indiscriminately at people", Ms Imam said.

... just like the lies after the shooting of Mr Poppo and the killing of Mr Eugene.
