aaagghhhh this is the new 'butter' thread isn't it :-5

I hate mince pies with a passion, and christmas cake, and christmas pudding.

The only good thing about the pies and puddings is the good old traditional Cornish Clotted Cream that has to be served with them :D

I haven't read the whole thread so no doubt someone has posted this already. Meat originally meant food, not just flesh type food. :-6

O.E. mete "food, item of food" (contrasted with drink), from P.Gmc. *matiz (cf. O.Fris. mete, O.N. matr, Goth. mats "food," M.Du., Du. metworst, Ger. Mettwurst "type of sausage"), from PIE *mat-/*met- "measure" (see meter (2)). Narrower sense of "flesh used as food" is first attested c.1300; similar sense evolution in Fr. viande "meat," originally "food." etc

Online Etymology Dictionary

------------------

Sometimes I make mince pies for Christmas. This year I bought a packet of good ones and we've already started on them. Great suet pastry taste.

You'll be collectively pleased to hear that I just brought a pound of shredded suet back from the butcher, I'm commissioned to cook tomorrow's lunch at my daughter's and the thread has inspired me to recreate the right boiled Spotted Dick.

Here's my intended method:20oz Gluten-free Self-Raising Flour

10oz Shredded Suet

half pint Milk

12oz Raisins

6oz Castor Sugar

2 Lemon fine-cut peel

Pinch Salt

Mix all of the dry ingredients

Add enough milk to produce a soft dough

Roll on a floured surface until 8 inches long and cylindrical

Wrap loosely in a floured cloth, leaving enough space for it to rise

Secure both ends

Steam for more than 2 hours

Which, with sufficient custard, ought to shut the guests up for the afternoon.
