User names are not usually real names
I thought forums were anonymous, like Pinky and Accountable, and Open Mind and Nomad and ARgi and Snooze and and and and miriam with a small m is not my first name that I am called. I am sorry if that is bad.

Hmmm you know come to think of it, I can't think of many people that's user name is really their first name. I know mine is, a few other people I could guess, but that's it.

I figured yours was Chris and probably miriam seemed my first name but I spelled it with a small m on purpose.

I have two children one nearly three and one three months, i have never smacked my children i think it causes distrust, my three year old does mis behave as all children do she sits in the corner to think about her behaviour and calms down and we start again, i dont understand how we can teach are children right from wrong when we smack them for misbehaving it is strange- how can we justify this way of discipline and call ourselves civillised??? I was smacked as a child and i never really understood it it made me lie to get myself out of trouble and scared when i made mistakes not a healthy environment!!!

Well, at last someone has actually addressed the issue. Hurrah for that. My views are:
1. That it is a matter for individual parents.
2. It depends on the children. Some are more wilful than others whereas others can be controlled with a fixed eye or a quiet word
3. I believe it is a weakness to say that because a particular method is used in one family, it is automatically suited to another.
4. I am opposed in principle to the state taking a hand in this. I trust the judgement of individual parents for more readily than I would trust the grey and inflexible hand of the state. Legislation is not, in my judgement, the way forward.
5...I think we should learn to distinguish in these debates between calculated corporal punishment and Grievous bodily harm.
6. I find the argument that corporal punishment somehow turns children into the ogres and adult misfits that some threads in this discussion claim. Forty years ago - not a long time ago - almost all male adults had been beaten at various times in their upbringing (fathers and schoolmasters) and the resulting generation was far more socially stable than its successor; the first to be brought up in a cane-free environment.

i'm from sonoma county, and i'm about five miles south of Santa Rosa - but i'm unclear what that has to do with the topic, billy.

Neither do I, but I did three separate web searches for statistics on not spanking or spanking children. In all cases, all that came up was spanking being abuse. Rather one sided. Entire pages of spanking abuses when I asked for not spanking. Evidentally not spanking is not known.
