There is RPG for playing, and PM's for personal stuff.

I didn't think it was optional - rather than closing a thread down when it's gone too far, move it into the outhouse when it starts becoming personnal.

Put a time limit on it, then close it down.

like we can with siggys? CG when you started your post counter way back I for one thought it was a lovely gesture to recognize peoples accomplishments. I am surprised it's become such a hot topic. I like the idea of the option to turn it off mind you, I suppose if it is offensive to the majority they may end up taking them away completely, but as the old saying goes "if you don't like it don't look at it" and to have it optional like siggys is a good idea.

Ok maybe I am not following here, but if a post count is high not only is it from a poster posting a lot but also they are getting a lot of responses back, that they reply to.... not clear is that.

Ok like a conversation,

Hello my name is so and so I like fast cars especially the whatever, and then you get a conversation going that surely is going to send a person's post count up if they reply to everyone who shares the same interest, perhaps there is a grey area there on how post counts can get so high.

I don't have a problem with whatever admin does regarding post count, I think the majority of members should have the say. If everyone wants it gone then so be it. It seems a tiny thing.

Morning All !!! I rather like Woodshed for the Sin Bin. Grin. Though I must admit TarPit has probably more potential for irreverent limerick rhyming. I have been thinking about the post counts. Thought it was something I just didn't see, and then realised I do look at postcounts when I come to the name of someone I don't recognise. It's a little like Learner Drivers. Someone with a low postcount is probably a newbie - you don't expect them to know what's going on (heck I bloody don't know what's going on most of the time grin), and you cut them some slack when they put a foot in it. People did this for me when I first arrived, and helped me and explained stuff and made allowances when I stuffed up.

On postcounts generally, it didn't really fit in my webdesign hat, but at the uni where I worked, I also did the biometric analysis - that was keeping track of numbers of publications, weighted by where the papers were published etc etc. And numbers of citations - other academics refering to those papers. Academic success, and therefore vital grant money, was based in large part on these rather problematic indicators. One academic may produce volumes of papers which may be of little real value. Another academic may produce a few very contraversial papers which everyone quotes mainly to rubbish them. A third researcher might produce one paper in his or her lifetime which changes medical science - and the world- forever.

Quantity is not meaningless. But it's always going to be quality that counts.

For post counts, I'm for removing them so long as the top posters list is still there. In fact, the more I think about it, the more I like it. I check it occassionally -- or used to, when I was posting often.

I think this is the third time I suggested it-post counts should be an option.

*it shows how little clout I have here, it is ignored my comments*

If you want post counts, have them.

If you don't, don't.

I prefer to have them. In fact, I think I would be upset if that option were taken away from me arbitrarily, since I have spoken up and am again for the third time on this subject.

There has been no decision on this from admin as far as I know.

Let there be peace, and consideration for all FG member's feelings. This includes this topic as well and I feel I have been more than ignored about it.

Personally I don't think post count should be removed, every forum has post counts. Now does it matter to me what my count is, or the next guys count is NO it truly doesn't. But for other it does as so be it, let them enjoy their post counts just like I enjoy reading them. For me its doens't matter a tinkers damn one way or the other but I do feel post count go with the territory called forums.

Yeah, what CARLA said.

I know I'm going to get banged up on this one but. . . . .

Just as an observation, it would seem to signal that HIGH "Post Counts" translates into many hours out of the day are actually being spent here Posting, rather then spent in the real world. It can, & has become an obsession, for some. I try to sign on evey day if I can, but not for more than 1 to 1-1/2 hours. As there are so many other real life things / activities that need to be done, that I can't seem to find the time for too much longer than that. Don't know how the rest of you handle it. :)

have to find my hammer first....

Possibly people have more time to spend on line than others possibly some find it an obsession but regardless it should not affect others as well we all don't know how each other spends their days.

Yes, I know how to do a poll.

But I am not going to. I don't want the post counts removed, and this is starting to tick me off. Admin. already knows what is posted and commented on.

Trace back who comlained about post counts in the first place.

LC.

Leave it alone.

Take a poll on your Outhouse or Tar Pit suggestions, I don't intend to visit threads that would end up in a place like that. Sounds so negative, as if we are asking for trouble. Lock 'em and drop 'em.

And I am becoming very frustrated with this tangential sidelines. It is not making me happy here. It is hard enough to come here anyway, after so many problems and destruction.

I am asking for poll counts to remain, and I have never asked for anything before. Asking for a poll is not a solution-post counts go, so do I.

You know Chonsi, I used to go to a forum called "CodeJunkies" There was a group of posters there that had thousnads of more posts than anyone else, including me.

After a while, they began to think they ran the board and not the mods. A flame-war and meltdown followed. Well, the upshot of it all was that after that high post group got collectively banned, they eliminated post counts.

Everyone, including me, was pretty sad for a while, but eventually we completely forgot about it and everything got much more peaceful!;)

If a person has a high post count it tell's me that you are a long standing well respected and highly valued member .. why feel ashamed you have earned it by regular contribution's to many many different discussion's and topic's. .. To reach into the thousands is a great achievement it means you have made many friend's and hopfully new member's will look to you for guidance . I've seen many people come and go and shoot way past me ..i'm not bothered .. the number to me is not important surely it's the contribution and content that count( i like fluffy) No one person is bigger than FG ... in a ideal world we should all be seen as equal:)

Thank you, Bez.

And forgive my bad temper about it.

It is never directly at your gentle self.

You see, some days I have nothing to look forward to, but go home and work, and work, and work again. I am here, on FG while I putter around and work-if not at my second or third job. I literally am working on my other jobs-write a lecture, input grades, etc. I come to FG every 10-15 minutes to see my friends, and what they are saying. Then I return, like now, to a class to teach.

I can at least look forward to coming here, and being happy for a small space of time. Then I must return to the realities of my own life, which are very grim. It is not happy, the glimpses of happiness are few and far between. A smile a day, if I am very fortunate. It is very hard, after 1 1/2 years. I go home to work, I cannot eat afterwards-so I don't. I just work.

It is true, when I say I do not watch TV, or go out to the movies, or go shopping. I cannot do that and work 80-100 hours a week, and then work when I come home. But I have the computer on, and I peek inside the screen to see you all, whom I love dearly, and laugh at your antics, Nomad cracking a joke, Bez talking about gardens, Theia beating my arcade scores, etc. For me, I need this. Or I am afraid of loosing what little bit of happiness there is for me.

I am sorry to have upset you, especially Bez. It is hard for me to explain sometimes, what FG means to me.

I know it wasn't your intention, Chonsi, but I can't help but feel humbled by what you said above. We rarely hear anything about your life because you are always "being there" for someone else...I've had first hand experience of your support and you give 200%. On FG your posts are always so lovely and positive and heartwarming, and any one of us can guarantee to be cheered by what you post...what a gift you give, Chonsi, thank you. I hope you know that if we can "be there" for you, we will be :-4

Huh! Beating your arcade scores, my foot! I've taken to shutting myself away with x-pipes because no-one else goes there and I can be champion (don't tell Pina or Abbey) :wah:
Live the questions now. Perhaps you will then gradually, without noticing it, live along some distant day into the answers...Rainer Maria Rilke

Surely if it's an option that you can turn on or off at will, then that's not a bad thing, is it, Chonsi? Just like those who choose not to view sig lines. Make it a choice. Freedom of choice is always a good thing.
