There were two writers in particular who invented vast quantities of cod-archaisms. One was The Boy Chatterton who died of it, and the other was Poet Laureate to the Queen because he helped her personify misery. I have always found most of the Idylls of the King unreadable - the only bit that works is Bedevere getting rid of Excalibur, where Tennyson forgets his stately pace and gets over-excited by the finally unavoidable storyline. Mind you, he was even worse when he abandoned archaism and wrote In Memoriam. On balance I prefer Tennyson comatose to Tennyson striving.

Tennyson should never be quoted as an authority on the English Language.
