By smaller, do you mean in area or population? Also, are you saying your nation would not protect Canada? We in the USA love Canada. Even when Canada was protecting draft so-called dodgers during the sixties & seventies, Canada was never threatened in any way. Stop being a troublemaker. We love each other! Canada is our great friend, second to your nation and placed above Israel.
I think you are wrong that China does not exert control over N.Korea. Help me understand that position, please.

By smaller I mean likely to lose in a two-way military confrontation. You'll no doubt observe that Canada won when last invaded by the USA but it had the military backing of its colonial master, Great Britain, which in any 21st century conflict would not under any circumstances be forthcoming. Nobody is going to fight a regional superpower armed with nuclear weaponry, not even if they hold two subs-worth themselves.
To think China exerts any degree of control over North Korea I think you need at least a basis of fact to ground your opinion on. I can think of none, you're inviting me to prove a negative which I'm obviously unable to do. What reason have you for thinking it's a real circumstance, and how many decades is it since it last happened? It may have been true under Mao, I don't know, but few Chinese or North Koreans have memories which extend that far back so it doesn't seem relevant, if it's never happened since.

Just spent some time doing a bit of research on China & it's relations with N. Korea. It seems you are correct sir, and I have been under a false assumption. The following are two of my sources if you care to read them:

If one hears nothing but bad about a bunch of people all one's life, what hope does one have of stepping back and being reasonable. There is no culture on earth remotely comparable to that of China, they are the great pearl among civilizations. It astounds me that they can be dismissed as war-mongers. The collective American psyche is driven from start to finish by an all-pervading baseless fear of trumped-up bogeymen.
I'd recommend the upcoming 6-episode http://www.pbs.org/show/story-china/

And up it went, and up it stayed...In a statement, the North Korean National Aerospace Development Administration said earth observation satellite Kwangmyongsong-4 had entered orbit about 10 minutes after lift-off from the Sohae space centre in North Phyongan province.
North Korea fires long-range rocket despite warnings - BBC News
The unmanned earth observation satellite is orbiting at a height of 310 miles with a period of 94 minutes, it's planned to operate for 4 years.
Well done North Korea, it's a greater independent step into space than the UK ever succeeded in achieving.
eta: "UN Security Council "strongly condemns" North Korean rocket launch"
Is this the same Security Council which created North Korea in the first place, authorizing military intervention by member states on the Korean peninsula in 1950? It's starting to give the appearance of long-term bias.

Most Gods in that part of the world were conceived far more conventionally. Korea's a very long way from Nazareth, Monotheists or Archangels.
The extent to which US Evangelical Christianity has corrupted Korean culture in the south of the country is deplorable but at least in the north they're having none of that thank you.
Cornwall's pretty well Christian-free these days too, thank Christ.

Next month doesn't look good if you're Korean.
"North Korea conducts live-fire drill with US submarine nearby, raising tensions", for example.
I quite like switching names and seeing if both statements are reasonable. If this was the US reacting to a North Korean submarine within sight of the coast of California, would people think it unreasonable for the US to have reacted? I suggest people would think it entirely reasonable. But not the other way about, apparently.
I'd still like to see a negotiated reunification of Korea, please, before Trumpolini's Pentagon lets fly with the cruise missiles and B2s.
If the cruise missiles do, in fact, fly next month, I would expect the Chinese army to temporarily line up along the 38th parallel and invite the Americans to stop firing.
Let me copy the text from the protest banner in that photo of a Terminal High Altitude Area Defense (THAAD) system arriving in South Korea: "NO THAAD! NO WAR! Hey! USA! Are you Friends? Or are you Occupation Troops?"
With friends like that, who needs enemies.

Reading up on the history of the Korean Peninsula, the idea of a Unified, or Reunified Korea is a fantasy of politicians. The only time in history that the peninsula was united under one government seems to be during the Japanese occupation. And, possibly during some periods of the Han dynasty.
As long as the Kim family is allowed to claim eternal rule of the northern half, I don't foresee a reasonable solution. On the other hand, for pretty much my entire lifetime, Korea has been like a carbuncle on the ass of the American claim to freedom and democratic rule.

I have said before that I'm confident the Kim family would retire from all their official positions as a part of a reunification agreement. They would have achieved what they set out to do back in the 1940s, which was to establish a unified independent non-aligned Korea free from foreign occupation.
I suspect if Kim Jong Un then stood for the Presidency of a newly reunified Korea he'd win, too, so long as the international election inspectors were properly impartial and rigorous.

If you look closely at the middle east you will find that we have been involved ever since we needed their oil and were powerful enough to do what we wanted. British petroleum used to be the anglo - persian oil company back in the days when american oil companies still had oil in the states to exploit. The US has taken over from us but the motives are the same access to oil ands governments dance to the oil companies tune.

North Korea 'executes' army chief of staff Ri Yong-gil - BBC News
For the sake of completeness, the news of the execution was invented by a South Korean government agency and was an entirely untrue hoax. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ri_Yong-gil notes this.
South Korean government agencies are forever lying about North Korea, and the BBC seems more than willing to repeat whatever they're told when it comes to vilifying Kim Jong-un.

You'll be interested to note the exploration of reunification going on ahead of the Winter Olympics in South Korea. Both North and South will parade together under a reunification banner and there's at least one token team merger to allow a reunified Korean team to compete.
North and South Korea have confirmed they are to field a joint women’s ice hockey team and will march under a pro-unification flag at next month’s Winter Olympics, in the clearest sign yet of a thaw in tensions between the two countries.
