I went bowling for the first time today.

The Ten Pin American version, not the UK version on grass with wooden bias weighted bowls.

5 of us played and I came 4th only ahead of an 8 year old, he scored 48 with me ten points ahead.

It was possibly the most humiliating experience of my life, I did enjoy it though, so the Bowling Rink uptown in the UK may get some more Derby and Joan custom when me and the missus sashay on down there.

I've been bowling a few times at Chat Room / Forum Meets. Mind you, at events like that I don't think scoring really came into it. I don't think anyone was keeping count.

The thing that has always puzzled me, though, is that you get those that really hurl the balls down the lane, & those that just let it trundle in its own time. The thing is, though, from what I've seen, the slower ones knock down more pins as it's more likely to set off a Domino Effect, whereas the hurling just blasts them out of the way.

I love Candlepin Bowling, which I only saw in New England. In it, the pins are smaller & straight; the balls fit in the palm of your hand & you get 3 shots, not two. While it is harder to score a perfect game in candlepin, it is easier to score something! I'm abashed to say my high score in regular bowling is.........................14! :yh_cry

I have had a couple of bad days, Lars didn't see me at my best, but I am OK today, and only two sleeps and I am seeing my Lady.

58 is not too shabby for a first-timer.

Had lots going straight down the gully, the first few were marvelous rolling backward though, strangely enough.

Then when I tried to improve my technique everything fell apart, I was well in the lead the first couple of frames.

I think my wife will want to play in the UK now.

Awoke 4.00am Panora drove to Des Moines plane at 7.30 to LaGuardia taxi to JFK...... dropped off luggage .....then onto the Skytrain then on the subway ending up at The World Trade Centre at last. Subway back to JFK Plus Sky train to catch plane,during the flights we lost 6 hours or did we gain them ? Got out the airport 10..00am UK time and an hour 30 drive home......on proper roads.....then straight to bed, awake 10.00oclock ish before taking a snack and sleeping till 7.00 am today

Observations.......We ate a Big Mac and fries to be contrary, and being prepared in it's birthplace doesn't make it any more palatable........unfortunately.

Impressed with the Memorials, I suppose New York being a busy city it will never stop looking like a construction site.

In Gatwick pairs of Police with automatic arms patrol........in no US airport did I see any openly armed Police.

In JFK impressed with a screened area for Islamic prayer, how free is that ?

Well, Iowa is GMT - 6 hrs.

New York is always busy. Horribly busy. But a fascinating place. The Wife and I were just discussing planning a week in NY on our next trip east.

Bug Mac. Yeah, I tried one of those once, not long after they were first introduced. I think I would need to be very, very hungry to ever have another. If you have to eat at Macdonalds, I suggest the quarter pounder with no cheese. It is almost palatable.

I remember seeing police at Heathrow, armed with automatic rifles. I thought it very odd, given how few police carried weapons in the rest of the UK.

Given the firearm philosophies of our two nations, it was an odd contrast between the two airport security methods.

Glad you are home safe and sound. When are you coming back?

Definitely jet lag, but overlaid with a chest infection and fatigue due to the drawn out journey.

We should have spent less time in Iowa, but that goes for Iowans too.

Funny........I stayed in a Best Western Hotel in NEW York last year, today I am staying at a Best Western Hotel in old York the original York in Yorkshire England.

Who could have imagined that ?

It is for my nephews wedding..........the food seems better here.

I stayed at that hotel about 10 years back, when doing some work over in Knaresborough. It is a nice one.

I wouldn't mind a return to Yorkshire.

I am not stalking you Lars.....honest.

The Reception is being held here. But the wedding itself is in a nearby village......the name escapes me.

We won't get any time to explore the place, although I would have liked to. Went for an Argentinian meal last night and then a beer, had a lay in this morning and a full English for breakfast, and awaiting transport to the church now.

Then back here again for the celebrations.
