Okay, we've all stated our opinion, had our fun, made our jibes at each other, but the bottom line is that in wartime, soldiers often commit deeds they would never even consider in peacetime. By its very nature war demeans. It causes ordinary men and women, just like you and I to change and if necessary become killers. Very few can handle the psychological pressures of combat and retain their humanity, their self respect.

It is in this context that a small group of US Marines were filmed urinating on dead Afghanistan combatants. This has caused outrage and has probably set back the peace efforts in this troubled land. It plays right into the hands of the Taliban and others of their ilk. Of course these soldiers will be punished and rightly so.

At the end of the day, what it graphically demonstrates is that there are no real victors in war, only victims.

I can't say I blame the soldiers. I don't approve of the actions in question but it's a symptom of a bigger crime. I'm against punishing the soldiers and all for an investigation into why they were there killing Afghans in the first place. That's the real question.

To add to that, as a Canadian, I'm not so much interested as why Americans were peeing on Afghans they shouldn't have encountered as to why Canadians are also there, peeing on the right to sovereignty. I don't recall the Afghans calling for help. I only recall the "Western" folk saying "Hand us this man we can't seem to find for ourselves!" Then creating a world war that we justified in the sake of women in need and later assassinating quite efficiently the person we killed thousand of civilians for because they didn't have our drone technology for killing themselves. And damn them because if they'd handed him over we might have averted all the questions as to what actually happened on 9/11... Which is one day before my birthday and now... thanks to all this ****ed up ****, I'll never celebrate another birthday without folks saying it must suck to be born a day after an event that has nothing to do with my birth.
