Despite their past willingness to air advocacy ads, CBS, UPN, and NBC have refused to run an advertisement for the United Church of Christ (UCC) that promoted inclusion of gays, racial minorities and people with disabilities because they consider it "too controversial" and "unacceptable for broadcast," according to a UCC press release. The ad depicts bouncers outside a church turning away gay, minority, and disabled parishioners, followed by the text: "Jesus didn't turn people away. Neither do we." Both CBS and NBC have aired advocacy advertising in the past -- including an ad put out by the George W. Bush administration and political infomercials by former presidential candidate H. Ross Perot.
According to UCC, CBS cited the current political controversy surrounding the issue of same-sex marriage -- noting in particular the Bush administration's endorsement of the Federal Marriage Amendment -- as justification for not airing the ad on CBS and UPN (both owned by Viacom). From the UCC press release:
"Because this commercial touches on the exclusion of gay couples and other minority groups by other individuals and organizations," reads an explanation from CBS, "and the fact the Executive Branch has recently proposed a Constitutional Amendment to define marriage as a union between a man and a woman, this spot is unacceptable for broadcast on the [CBS and UPN] networks."
It is not clear from the excerpt quoted by UCC what CBS could possibly think is the connection between the administration's endorsement of a constitutional amendment banning gay marriage and the promotion of inclusiveness by a church. But even if there were such a connection -- that is, even if the UCC's "position" could be reasonably deemed in opposition to that of the administration -- the question remains: How does CBS justify rejecting an ad that purportedly conflicts with the Bush administration's views, given CBS' apparent willingness to air advocacy ads that support administration policies? As Media Matters for America documented, in criticizing the network for refusing to run a progressive group's ad critical of the administration during the 2004 Super Bowl, Senator Richard Durbin (D-IL) noted with approval that CBS ran a "risky, edgy, controversial" but "important" ad sponsored by the Bush White House-operated Office of National Drug Control Policy during the previous year's Super Bowl broadcast.

Erm, hi Abbey, prostitution is legal in the UK, but soliciting isn't - there's another thread with some info in FG somewhere. Homosexual marriage is not legal, 'though it isn't illegal, either. The concept doesn't exist in law.

They were advertising they would accept gays, that 's why the ad got banned apparently.

The point of the advert was that they accepted everyone, Abbey, it contrasted them with some of the other churches in America, which do turn away 'undesirables'.

Let's play psycho-analyst. Clearly there is some huge ugly fear inside that makes it impossible for her to accept homosexuality among men. It's threatening in some way, and who knows why? All I know is that it's sad to see anyone live in that kind of fear trap.
So, let's all grunt and crawl up to the high road, leaving the fear trap far behind us. There are better things to worry about.

Why are you all so wrapped up in this gay stuff? i have a right to opinion, i most likely pay more revenue each year than you all, if i had to make the final decision on this ridiculous need, it would be NO. If you are so horrified by my comments, don't look over here at the Gay Marriage thing, i speak simple english. at least i think i do, this is not deliberate to aggravate anyone, i don't agree with any-of-it. No psycho-analysis is needed...if it soothes your wounds then try.. :-6 i am not attending the wedding either?

Yes.. you do have a right to your opinion Paula. Your remarks do not "horrify" me, but to state your feelins in such a manner as to degrade another person is insulting as I have stated before in this thread. You probably are much wealthier than I am. Honestly I don't see why, based on your remarks in these forums, anyone would want to do business with you. But remember, wealth is not measured in dollar signs alone.
You seem to pride yourself on how you treat your employees.. offering them all these wonderful benefits 401K, health ..etc. Would you offer the same benefits to a lesbian or gay couple..?? Many companies do now.

You pay more revenue each year than all of us so this gives you the right to be nothing but rude and insulting? If that's what it's like to be wealthy, I shall thank God every day that I'm not. If this is not deliberate to aggravate anyone, then try thinking before you type.

Please note the previous posts in this thread. Did you ever think the very reasons for not allowing marriage of this nature "could" be a result of poor attitude and behavior? or is it just having a difficult time being accepted, and why has it not been approved? good question? This is certainly an excellent thread to vent, and i like it too, but you know what, the way i feel, many people feel the same..they are just not here expressing that. I am amused myself as to how this issue will eventually end? hahahaha -- :driving: see ya.

Dear Olly; you are experiencing the every day pressures in life. Not everything will go the way we desire. It is not hateful to comment in a comical manner? It is not healthy to take seriously of others you do not know? Perfect answers come from childrens toys that teach the alphabet and words, (not being rude now)...you write as an articulate, nice young man. (this is a compliment). You do express anger in your writing, and thats normal...we learn with time to appreciate people, and understand them, it just takes time. You appear confident and need no army to get your point across, wish you the best, you will be fine.... :-6

I am not offended in the slightest. I think Bill was refering to an earlier post, but I could be wrong.
One of the hardest things about being as intelligent as you are is that people expect much from you. Some days it's a little hard to meet their expectations. It's the price you pay for being exceptional...so try not to sweat it, and just make growly noises at people when you don't feel like taking the high road.

WHY IS OLLY UNDER REVIEW HERE? Of all things I've read here I think his posts are of very little concern when it comes to insulting!!!!!
At least he makes sense, is sincere and seems to actually believe what he is writing (unlike some). At least he is someone you could have an actual arguement with.

Now that this topic is over..Just read the entire thing this morning..I need to say something... The reason that many people are opposed to gay marriage, has nothing to do with a moral determination. Marriage, is one of the final rituals, left in our country that has belonged to the traditional, the conservative, and the religious. Our family structure has fallen apart here. This final allowance, would do it in totally. Create the same union, call it something else. Give it to homosexuals, to have as their own. Then those couples could have the same legal rights as heterosexual couples, but no one would be offended. Its like trying to join a club, that you dont have the credentials to join. Ex; The french club,
when you dont speak French. the new arrangement would carry pride with it. It
would make history. Noone would be offended.
