cars wrote: Yes mover, friends on "This" forum are actually pen pal "friends", and more. That are worldly & wise, with real "lifes" experiences. Many of them "have been there," "done that", & have survived & learned from their experiences. Who in turn, are willing to & can offer (share) their knowledge, experiences, & wisdom they learned with someone (friends) in need on here who is seeking help/info/guidance/ support. You don't really need to meet face to face with other forum members to be able to share their own wisdom. Wisdom is offered so as to try to save the "info seeker" from making the same mistakes as made by the "info giver". In any event, whether or not if the info seeker accepts the info/wisdom offered, is solely at their own discretion. (However, the giver's intent is usually heartfelt, & genuinely offered.) :-2

So, no matter that the people involved tell you themselves that they have real, true friends here, you still scoff, as if it doesn't mean anything.

Fine, it doesn't have to mean anything to you, but it does mean something to all of us. It's just a shame that given your viewpoint, you will never be able to really be a part of it. Because it's a great thing to be part of. Your loss.

When I first became involved with this forum and was sharing something with my one daughter, she patiently said to me "Mom, you do know, they aren't real people!"

Slap! Shock. Upset. Made me to feel a bit foolish.

Then my sister, CD, told me -- they are too real people. Don't listen to her!

I believe the passion that I have seen spark across this screen can only be caused by true flesh and blood, deep feeling people. You can choose to view it, or share in it. I, for one, want to be a part of it.

I feel kind of sorry for you, Moverguy.

I am kind of new here, so I don't have any close friends on this forum. Yet.

I have been a member of a rottweiler forum for 4 years now, however and I can promise you - the friends that I have made there are some of the best friends I have ever had. Even the ones I haven't met. I can count half a dozen people who would drop everything to help me if I needed it. When my dog, that I had for 8 years died suddenly last year, I can promise you - there were tears shed from Canada to California. I know that everyone there is praying for my husband nightly because, well, he is my husband and he is in harm's way.

We may not know everything about every one here. But the goodness shines through even the most heated arguement. And you never know, some people who spend lots of time in this forum and others, may be a shut in for whatever reason. Having friends on line that they can share with is a bright spot in an otherwise, often painful, day.

To which I replied, BASICALLY knock it off and get off the computer and live, be a mom, go to the doctor kinda thing.

This is a response I got, and fair and reasonable - and then it got me to thinking - - Are you all for real? Does a computer screen, and chat room, a forum really give people the sense of belonging?

BY BEZ: On the whole good advice....but please note....FG is an entertainment medium, but it is also a LIFELINE for many people who come here for friendship and support.

How can people let themselves believer that this is really anything other than a chat / entertainment medium? I MEAN REALLY? If you are neighbors, meet, chat and have looked into each others eyes, and know that you have gazed upon that soul, heard that voice –

Is the internet the next Whiskey, Cocaine, and Gambling addiction? We are SOCIAL, tribal and community organisms. Words like “lifeline” are too strong for a PC room… WE HONESTLY DON’T KNOW A DARN THING ABOUT EACH OTHER?!?!?!? For those whom have never met, face to face and have seen and held one another with their own senses.
Mover guy... I always have to be the one saying this... like Im 80 years old.. But Ive got to think.. Are you quite young??? Let me tell you about a time when people connected with people.. Late 60s early 70s.. we made connections that lasted a life time. Brief encounters with strangers where words were exchanged that could last in your mind forever. Helping hands, or pats on the back from people you didnt even know that warmed you to your soul. This seems to be an era where people dont connect with each other. This Forum is a rare and magical place. Basic psychology is that people, initially will find it easier to bare their souls to others they have no connection with. But then, a connection will be discovered,

formed and quite possibly... last forever. I lead a very solidary life these days.. not too much social life where I live. No one special in my life right now. I have an opportunity to come here and offer kindness, strength, hope, support and maybe a little humor to anyone here. In return... I get to feel good. I am amazed that I love it here. It has connected me to a world larger than I ever could have imagined inhabiting. Im not anyones best friend here. My intention is that someday, somewhere, someone from here.. in time of need.. will remember something I said.. and it just might comfort them, or get them through, or make them laugh. That is why... aside from entertaining myself, I am very very careful about what I say. Because what you say, is who you are. Once our words are shot out into the universe...... they stay there forever.... landing somewhere.. influencing someone. Words make a difference.

Really??.............I have heard more from my "FRIENDS" at the FG then some life long friends....This is my "out" - my escape to the "good life"...this is my passion......this is my "window to yell out of".........this is my "home away from home" when I am stuck on advice....this is my "laughter" and my "cure"...........this is real.........to me. If you think I am insane...so be it. But I will say with out the words of encouragement or the hugs and special thoughts and prayers I could have not become the strong person I am right now....they can not see me...no hair, pale faced, and ill....so they do not dwell on my illness...they make it a whole lot easier...I can come here and talk about something besides my illness...if it means a cyber beer or a laugh here and there...its better then everyone looking at me and saying..."oh you look so tired, lay down" blah blah.....I would like to invite you all to my house in June..Come to Iowa-- I will put you all up and we will have a party to celebrate our friendships..then - when some one can come on here and say--we don't know each other--not only will will know them in our hearts but in person!! Party at MOMS house......in IOWA!!

Dudes, if ANY of you see this as other than entertainment, and comedy, then you are all pretty much screwed.

Now I feel really sorry for you. To think that people are screwed or living some kind of fantasy by making friends online.

How limiting.

To call someone that you just chat to on a BB a friend seems to me, to be like, people who think soap characters are real.

And yet, the people that I chat with on BB send care packages to my DH in Iraq, call my house periodically to check up on me and have ALWAYS been there when I needed a shoulder to cry on.

These guys have REALLY been there for me in the past few days! I love it in here! What's the difference between chatting over the internet and becoming friends and chatting over coffee and becoming friends. And TMC, dont say, because over the internet people can say anything, well some lie over coffee about who they are.

Communicating for a period of at least one year, on a forum like whe have here, should be a prerequisite for dating. Its so great because ( as well as discovering people you enjoy and admire...) It gives you the chance to choose to walk on hot coals,or have needles stuck in your eyes...rather than spend time conversing with those who display twisted and generally hateful character traits. So many innocent people who fall victim to sociopaths could be spared so much pain.
