The core reason for not routinely arming UK police is that armed UK police kill innocent people, repeatedly. The fewer such incidents the better. The table below gives an indication of how comparatively dangerous policing in the UK is - as you can see, it's pretty low down the list of dangerous occupations. By contrast, the the UK national rate of deaths occurring in or following police custody is three per 100,000 arrests.
