Now their are alot more mods here we are doing a general tidy up on the forum.

As some members may be aware, moderators have been removing "hot linked" images from their posts.

We would just like to clarify that hot linking as always been against FG rules and reasons why can be read here:

Any member who has an image removed from their post will be informed with a friendly pm.

Their are numerous image hosting sites that people can use to host their pictures and images. You dont need to clutter up your own hard drive.

Here are some links for you to try.

Be very sure of what your doing mods. Delete the "Hot link" not the post or thread. If necessary have another mod take a look if you not sure of the process.

Are you saying that it is okay to hotlink to photos posted on imagehosting sites????? Can I hotlink to an image posted on, for instance, one of my own webpages?

The reason we decided to post this was for peeps to ask those kind of questions Kooks, it was to try and help you guys as TS doesnt want any hotlinking here and it has gone under the radar for quite a while and its pretty obvious that alot of people cant have known they were doing it if they dont even understand what it is. I will try and explain.

URL

Acronym for Uniform Resource Locator. Addressing system used in the World Wide Web and other Internet resources. An address such as "http://www.forumgarden.com" is a URL. Most say ‘web address’.

Inline linking (also known as hotlinking, leeching, piggy-backing, direct linking, offsite image grabs and bandwidth theft) is the use of a linked object, often an image, from one site into a web page belonging to a second site. The second site is said to have an inline link to the site where the object is located.

If you are on a website with say, a penguin on it and you want to post the picture of the penguin here, the correct thing to do would be to copy that penguin to your computer, by right clicking and selecting "Save image as..."

The wrong thing to do, hotlinking, would be to copy the penguin right off that page and then paste it in your post at FG.

Maybe Chezzie can explain better. I'm not the best at it. :o

By the way, probably most of us have hotlinked at least a few times. I did it regularly myself. We mods are not trying to make any members feel bad for this so please know that. We're just doing what Tombstone (the man who runs FG) has asked us to do. :) The reason being, when you hotlink an image, it's called bandwidth stealing. I don't know enough about bandwidth to explain it properly but basically, it's making the owner of that site pay for your use of his graphics.

Do not right click on an image and then select properties, just to view the source and location of the file so you can copy and select the URL address to place the image into a forum, message board, web site or any other destination on the web. This is bandwidth theft. You should always choose "Save As" and save it to your computer. Then either host it on your domain or find an image host provider that will allow you to upload it to their server to use.

http://www.invision-graphics.com/stop_b ... theft.html

I use photobucket but their are loads which are all free. You can also create albums to host your own personal pics so you never need to lose any pics or clutter up your hard drive.

For photobucket you just sign up for a free account, browse the web, find pics and save them to your pc then go to photobucket and upload it from your pc to your album there and delete the pic on your pc. Photobucket also has a search feature on thousands of images and if you click on one you like it will give you an [img] code which you can copy and paste straight into your posts here without needing to bother to save it.

Im not the best at explaining things but I tried lol:D

I save everything to "my pictures" on my hard drive and then download them to photobucket. You can edit your pictures in photobucket so they'll be the right size to upload them to FG.

Where do you save all of your pics to Kaz and then don't you have to edit them if they're too big?

Okay - would some technical moderator please explain to me what the difference is between hotlinking to an image hosted in say, Photobucket - like the signature pictures used by RedGlitter,Chezz and Kaz on this page of this thread, and linking in exactly the same way to photos on other websites. Is it the linking per se or is it the copyright issue??? If I link to a photo I have taken myself, on a webpage hosted by my own internet provider, does this constitute a hotlink, under the TOS rules?

Example..

When you hotlink an image, every time the image appears on the page it has to be fetched from the original site and therefore uses bandwidth over the link out of the original site and into ForumGarden - this upsets the administrator of both sites. Now I personally don't mind upsetting the Admin of another site but I'd hate to pi$$ Tombstone off and he really does not like having another Admin on his case.

When you upload it using manage attachments is it available to ForumGarden without an external link - everybody happy and a peaceful Garden.

So, copyright aside, the first three should be OK but the last one not.

Bryn, what I'm asking is why sites like Photobucket are different. It's a genuine question, not nitpicking. Photobucket and the other couple of apparently acceptable sites are outside ForumGarden - aren't they?. Fine for storing your images, but linking anything stored there remotely isn't using the Manage Attachments function at all - as far as I can see. In the graphics examples I cited, each one was linked directly to the remote site. Bandwidth is used in the when graphics are uploaded from them - isn't it?. Maybe the Admins there don't mind, but what's the difference from ForumGarden's point of view? You and Spot and Flopstock are techie Moderators. I'd really like an answer to this question.

Here is a hotlink?????

Still, I'm hoping to get a proper answer to what I think is a reasonable, unloaded, technical question. Several of the current moderators here are computer people. Someone from those should be able to answer. Please!

Thanks though, Abbey, for taking the time to answer at all. Floppy is going to try and find out for me. I'm genuinely bewildered. Maybe the tempting little mountain icon above the text box should be removed, if Management seriously only wants us to use the Manage Attachment function for any graphics. (Of course we could code in a hotlink, but most ordinary punters probably won't). I'll wait for a proper ruling on those apparently exempt photo hosting sites listed in Chezzie's OP.

That's the only way I know how to do it, by right clicking on the pic and going into properties and copying & pasting the url number.

http://www.free-webhosts.com/hotlinking-checker.php

"Hotlinking (hot linking) - "Hotlinking" (also called "hot linking", "leeching", and "bandwidth theft") is a term referring to when a web page of one website owner is direct linking to the images or other multimedia files on the web host of another website owner (usually without permission, thus stealing bandwidth). This not only causes the other person to pay for the bandwidth of the hotlinked file, but often is intellectual property theft. The term is also used loosely (a misnomer) by free image hosts which allow you to store images on their server and allow you to direct link the hosted image files on forums or other websites (sometimes altering the image to have a watermark). One of the most common occurrences of "hot linking" is when people are forum posting and they hotlink pictures from another website to use as avatars or signature images on the messageboards (forums). Some disadvantages of hot linking worth considering are that the webpage generally loads slower when you link to images stored on a different web hosting server than the webpage is hosted on, and the owner of the image has full control to disable hotlinking, or delete, rename, or worse yet, do a "switcheroo" (i.e., switching the file name to be another image which is sure to cause the hotlinker embarrassment) of the hot-linked image. Common methods of preventing hotlinking are by using an .htaccess file, using the "Hotlink Protection" offered in control panels such as Cpanel, or simply renaming image files periodically."

----------------

I think I'm starting to get a glimmer, Abbey!!! "Direct linking" and "hotlinking" are not identical !!! This would explain why Chezzie's sites are okay to direct link to for signatures etc. I'll explore more in the morning. You rock, Abbey.

Your two signature images come up with a clean bill of health via the hotlink test site, Jimbo. My own small photo of my swimming daughter on my internet provider where I pay for webhosting doesn't.

Not nitpicking at all, a very good question that I couldn't immediately answer because it is still a hot link that takes up bandwidth.

So thanks to Chezzie and Koan who have come up with the answer - although it is a hot link, it isn't bandwidth theft as the site has given permission and therefore it isn't hotlinking.

Also, having given permission they have also agreed to host the image for a reasonable period of time and not to play fast and loose swaping the picture for something offensive.

Thankyou Bryn. I did some interesting research last night - with Abbey's help - and thought that must be the difference. Great to have it officially confirmed. And a definitive ruling given. I think I'm going to try and just use the Manage Attachments function or merely post a suggested link so a reader who wants to see an illustration can go to the actual website it's on and view it there, if they wish. Again, thank you!
