2005/06/15 02:50 M 7.0 OFF COAST OF NORTHERN CALIFORNIA Z= 10km 41.33N 125.86W

A Magnitude 7.0 earthquake at 10km depth is quite a shake. There was an earlier, smaller, one a couple of days back north-east of San Diego. I hope it settles back to being quiet.

Location with respect to nearby cities:

145 km (90 miles) WSW of Crescent City, California (pop 4,000)

155 km (95 miles) WSW of Brookings, Oregon (pop 4,000)

155 km (95 miles) WNW of Eureka, California (pop 26,000)

480 km (300 miles) NW of SACRAMENTO, California

It's happened before on that coast, apparently. An Alaskan quake in 1964 made waves out to Hawaii. "Hardest hit was Crescent City, where 11 people were killed after waves reaching as much as 20 feet destroyed half of the waterfront business district." - just the same bit of coast that this quake shook.

I visited Kodiak AK ten years later. You could see where the tsunami had been. There were newer buildings below the waterline and older ones above it.

I got a call from my son last night. He lives on high ground close to the coast and he said he had a lot of friends at that moment.

Thank you. I'm glad the quake didn't generate a tsunami. One of these days it will and the results will be unthinkable.

Three more today, magnitudes 6.4, 4.6 and 4.5, all around the same area off the coast, all aftershocks from the three a couple of days ago which were magnitude 7.0, 4.6 and 4.6. They're not big, but they're unusually located.

I hope these are not preludes to something.

I live in La Jolla, CA.....where they were thinking might be hit........but I turned on the news and no major stations were carrying it.......so said to myself, it's probably not going to happen here or it would be all over the news.

I'm 3 blocks from the beach and high enough to not be affected but I did stay awake and finally got the news that it was simply a computer generated warning and that since the quake was so far out at sea nothing would happen here. However.........the people at low lying beach were actually told to evacuate......and DID!

I'm glad we have this warning system however......good thing, and it works.

Better safe than sorry! :)
