WASHINGTON - Women in the military would be barred from serving in direct ground combat roles, under a House bill that sets Defense Department policy and spending plans for the upcoming budget year.

The House Armed Services Committee approved the overall measure early Thursday on a 61-1 vote. The same committee in the Senate passed a different version last week. The House and Senate are to vote on their respective bills next week.

Like Lady Cop:-2 good point. i think women soldiers will be insulted at the implication they cannot handle combat. :yh_femfig when i was in academy we had a lot of defensive tactics, and one thing was ground fighting. tactics to retain and protect our weapon in an attack. all the females had female partners except me, my partner was a 6'2" guy. well when he tried to take my gun i nearly ripped his ba--s off, and the entire class said they did not want to mess with me! it doesn't matter at all who goes to combat. there are women capable of front line war who like guns and battle, let them go! clearly a choice for women who feel they can defend themselves in war, the training prepares them. they may do a good job? :-2

I’m sure there are women who could do just fine in combat. Is anyone considering the fact that this isn’t about what individual soldiers want to do with their careers? This issue is bigger than that. There were a lot of things I wanted to do but didn’t get to do when I was in the military. They wouldn’t let me do them because I was part of a group that had been identified as not suitable for that type of work. I’ve never lost any sleep over it.

My SIL will be with you in Iraq. My heart hurts every day. He tells me always - Mom - I do it for my country. I know he does it for me and all the people of 9/11 - and girlfriend so do you. Thanks. I'm with the other grandmas here - if your daughter needs a care package - maybe free cell phone time with her - ASK - you SHALL receive.

What I don't understand about this close minded attitude about women in combat is.... isnt' combat a skill? Arent men and women trained equally? It isn't about who is bigger or stronger. Crazy. I have heard the only real disadvantage many women have in a single job is as a fireperson, as not all have the strength to carry an overweight body from a burning building.
