Suzy there's nothing uncommon about this. Dogs in the middle of a fight will sometimes do this because they're still in fight mode. I'll bet most likely the person tried to pull the dogs apart or got his hands and face in the way and then was attacked. If so this isn't a case of bad dogs as much as it is a case of not knowing how to properly break up a dogfight/failing to understand dog behavior.

Suzy there's nothing uncommon about this. Dogs in the middle of a fight will sometimes do this because they're still in fight mode. I'll bet most likely the person tried to pull the dogs apart or got his hands and face in the way and then was attacked. I was brought up around pit mixes and they never did anything but protect me. I only saw them when I went to my grandparents house. But my grandfather was an ace at training and he talked to them all the time. He told them we were coming and who we were and taught us how to act.
The greatest part was they would try to protect me if I was about to get spanked. :wah: He would let my parent know it would not be a good thing to do. They would have to take us into the other room just to raise their voices to us. The dog never threatened them or harmed them. He would jump up and put his feet on them and look at them but that was all.
My best friend went with me to my grandfathers house one day and I told her, whatever you do, do not hug my grandfathers neck, even if he asks. Well, he did and she did and Buster put his feet on her back and looked around at her. She knew the dog and reached around petted his head and let go of my grandfather. Then my grandfather reached out to her and Buster got between them and was going to protect her. :wah:
My poor half deaf Golden, when in full sleep mode, sleeps like a log if he is laying on his good ear. If I brush up against him, he will raise his head, sleepy eyed and give me that mucus inflamed growl. Once his head clears, he stops and wags his tail and apologizes by getting up and rubbing against me. It's a long story why he does this, but I won't get into that now.
I think Red is right. Small children and dogs or cats or any animal for that matter don't mix. But control and training are key. Love goes a long way in controlling an animal.
I believe in leash laws and keeping people from coming in your yard if you have a dog. I tell all the kids around me not to play with my dog. I don't think he will hurt them but if they hurt him, he may protect himself. I just want them and my dog to be safe. :-6
