A mother and son were brutally attacked and raped in Florida by a group of teenagers. That's horrible, but I found this comment by a neighbor despicable.

So a lady was raped. Big deal," resident Paticiea Matlock said with disgust. "There's too much other crime happening here."

Are folks really in high crime areas really becoming that desensitized to the violence?

God, how awful. I wonder how she'd have felt if SHE would have been the one to suffer the nightmare that woman and her very young son had to suffer. Some people just have no sense at all.

Magenta, the shock is what *makes* people do something about it. If you get jaded it becomes routine. You accept it: "yeah the world sucks, whadd're ya gonna do?"

Okay, point taken about it not being related to war.

However, whether it happens there, on your turf, or anyone else's turf, it's bad. Sometimes bad is bad. (To quote the song.) Sure it happens all the time and even worse stuff, but I for one am not going to become used to it just because it does.

I think that's the whole crux of that woman's remark. She needs a dire attitude adjustment.

You pointed out that "the most prosperous country in the world" has a 60% below poverty level. Any time you get a chance, you pop off on the States. You really need to cease with that schlock.

You have more than two million Aussies living below poverty level.

Yet you're considered "The Lucky Country." Why is that?

When it comes to rich countries, few spend less than Oz on social security. Your payments are low and fewer people receive them in Oz than in most other developed nations. Why is this?

Your country seems to treat its Aboriginal people the same way the United States treats its Indians/Native Americans. You have the same drinking problem (no doubt induced by impoverishment and oppression) with your Aboriginal people as we do our Indians. Why is this?

Your Aboriginal people have a problem with violence in their community yet violence is used on them when they're in the slammer. Why is this?

Sexual abuse is another problem with the Aboriginals. Girls as young as 12 years old are becoming mothers. What's Australia doing about this issue?

Is this really the right thread to make such an awesomely misinformed attack? You seem to have copy/pasted utterly inaccurate material without even considering whether it might be true or not, just to hit out.

I am all for a special Australian thread, and I don't know that that info is inaccurate or rmisinformed since it came from Australia's bigwigs themselves.

Nor is it an attack at all. I do feel if someone is going to throw out statistics about a country, it's only right they be willing to address that of their own.

We don't know though everything bout the story, but I wonder how many are living in poverty because it's easier to collect a welfare check rather than get a job.

I don't think the fireworks they confused for gun shots, were the pretty sparkly ones that go up in the sky. They were probably black cats or something similar. And those are easy to confuse with gunshots.

The brutality of the attack shocked me yes. I know horrid crimes occur, but it shocked me.

IMO, I hope what this lady was trying to say was, with all the crime running rampant there, it took a most gruesome crime for someone to finally pay attention to them and send for help from law enforcement and the city.

Cell phones have become the bane of this existence. Land lines are cheaper and literally have unlimited calling in your area. When did we become so very important that we can't leave the house without getting a call? How does someone under the poverty level afford them?

UUMMMM, want ads? Get a job! No one wants to start out at $8.00 an hour-everyone wants to start at $40.00/hr. How is that done? By starting out at $8.00/hr, get experience, finish your education and then move up to $40.00/hr.
