call the police?

Post by pink princess »

was at lunch just now and i saw a couple of boys walking round with a fairly big looking knife, they then started to stab random objects (not people!) like bins and trees, so i decided to call the local police and tell them......

i cant decide if i was being over the top or did the right thing

i guess in theory they could have gone and stabbed a human, they shouldnt have been carrying a knife like that in he first place plus were about 17 so should most likely have been in school....

any of you do anything similar to this?? (as in calling the police not walk round and stab random objects!!)

When we were in London I reported someone who left their bag (well not a bag them trolley things that you drag behind) in the middle of a crowd and walked off. I left it for about 10 mins and when he didn't come back I found a policeman and told him

I don't feel I overreacted and don't think you did

people find it too easy to turn a blind eye these days

better safe than sorry...as they say.

if those kids would have stabbed a 70 year old woman...you would have felt terrible for not reporting them.

I would have. They were being dangerous with it and easily could have caused damage maybe to personal property.

Hi Pink Princess,

It sounds like you may done the right thing. I don't know what the laws are there for carrying knives, but Rule #1 with knives under the "Queen's Law" is:

"in the presence of one or more persons, exhibit any deadly or

dangerous weapon in a rude, angry or threatening manner,

or shall have or carry such weapons upon or about his

person when intoxicated... or shall to any

minor under the age of sixteen years any such weapon

without the consent of the parent... shall be [fined or

imprisoned]."

Therefore, whether or not it is a fixed blade, over 3.5", concealed or not, lacking judgment in its handling is the one ingredient that will get you in trouble.

These kids were acting in a way that a reasonable and prudent person would feel threatened. I'm glad you called them on it!

Vandalizing bins is a crime, isn't it? And I'm betting that it would have escalated to ever and ever greater vandalism. Or one of the fools might have wounded the other on accident. Of course you did the right thing! Always trust your instincts. Besides, if the police investigate and they find nothing wrong, no harm done, eh?

You did the right thing. Here in our relatively large city our cops "want" you to call them for just about anything. And they would have been more than willing to deal with that kind of situation. They are awesome here. I called them on my neighbors who had music going at 3:00am so loud I could hear the words and we live in... houses. The cops told me they would look after it and for me to not go over and confront the neighbors. They were done with it all about 1.5 hours later.

Other incidents I had to call them for, to go into my house that was walked into, nothing taken nothing vandelized but intruded upon.

I also had to call them to pick up a young man in the down town core who was bleeding all over the place.

They have been most obliging all 3 times.

Don't know about England but in Scotland it's carrying an offensive weapon-they'd get lifted for that alone.
