well you knew i'd show up for this...i really hate the way the cop was bashing that guy in the face. not necessary.
....in all fairness i don't know what led up to this, but there are other alternatives.

I agree with you Val. The punches to the face were uncalled for. Were they trying to handcuff him?? If so why wasn't he on his stomach??

First thought: with thugs like that on the street, you don't need un-official
criminals. Next thought: If I were the person videoing this incident, I'd be
very, very glad that I wasn't seen doing it. Next thought: I wonder whether
there was more to proceedings than this shows? Next thought - it doesn't
matter, the shaven-headed thug on the right, kneeling on the grass, must
undoubtably go down for this.

"the officers said they punched him amid concern that he might grab one of
their guns" Yeah, right.

I'm not a police officer and I've never been trained to be one. Until I'm faced with subduing a known violent criminal, I'll tend to give the police the benefit of the doubt. Pictures may speak a thousand words but they don't always tell the whole story. But I have to keep wondering - the police should know by now that everybody has a camera. Can't they consider waiting 'til they get to the jail if they just want to beat the crap out of somebody?

This does seem more than a little excessive but as others have said this is just a snapshot of the incident and we don't know the full story.
As LC will tell you it is really hard to restrain someone who doesn't want to be restrained and to do it safely without anyone getting hurt takes more than two officers, add drink or drugs into the equation then it gets really tough.

from what i have since heard, the guy was some vicious gangbanger...and the officers have been cleared of wrongdoing. i have had to hobble or spray or tase people, but bashing them in the face is a no-no unless you are in a ground fight and they DO go for your gun...then anything goes!

My little brother for the rest of his life will carry a plate and several
screws in his right ankle from a take-down. And he had 2 other officers
assisting him at the time. It's not always an easy thing.
Apparently, the LAPD is allowed "distraction strikes" to get compliance.
There are quite a few (even some police critics) who say this one falls
into a grayer area than other "high profile" incidents.
I say we try to trust our officers and not handcuff THEM. Are there
rotten apples on police forces? Sure. But we need to let them do their
jobs. There are plenty of watchdog groups out there now.
Me, I was under arrest I submit fully, and deal with whatever later.
You have to just stop when the officer tells you to, and a lot of
these scumbags just don't. Then they cry foul and lawyer up.
Wrong in my book.

suspect now in custody-------------TAMARAC, Fla. -- One sheriff's deputy was killed and another was wounded after being gunned down during a routine traffic stop, authorities said Sunday. A massive search for the suspect or suspects was underway.
Deputy Brian Tephford, a six-year veteran of the Broward Sheriff's Office, was fatally shot just after 11 p.m. Saturday at the Versailles Gardens Condominium here, the sheriff's office said.
Authorities say 34-year-old Tephford, who was pronounced dead at 12:01 a.m. Sunday, called for back up minutes before the shooting and Deputy Corey Carbocci was dispatched to the scene.
Shortly after, the sheriff's office said, both deputies were fired on. Neither had a chance to fire their own weapon, authorities said.
"It would appear that they were taken totally by surprise by this shooting," Sheriff Ken Jenne told television station WTVJ.
Carbocci, 37, who was wearing a protective vest, was listed in stable but guarded condition Sunday at Broward General Medical Center, according to the sheriff's office.

update...i don't know why he was not wearing vest----
CRIME SCENE: Deputies and officers from agencies throughout Broward blocked intersections to seal the search area.
A Broward Sheriff's deputy is dead today and another wounded after someone inside a white Geo Metro opened fire during a late-night traffic stop in Tamarac.
The car sped away, but was found abandoned in Sunrise, where hundreds of law officers converged and were going door to door. At least one suspect was being held, though authorities were looking for others. Several witnesses were being questioned.
Deputy Brian Tephford was killed when one of the occupants of the car shot him twice, authorities said. It happened in the 8500 block of Colony Circle near the Versailles Gardens condominium, where Tephford had been working an off-duty detail.
The 34-year-old deputy's weapon remained strapped in its holster, according to BSO.
A second deputy who had been called to the scene as backup during the traffic stop, Corey Carbocci, was shot four times.
Carbocci, 37, was in stable condition at Broward General Medical Center. He, too, never had the chance to remove his weapon from its holster, BSO said.
''It would appear that they were taken totally by surprise by this shooting,'' Sheriff Ken Jenne told television station WTVJ.
Tephford was not wearing a protective vest.
After the shooting, the car sped off. Law officers pursuing the car lost sight of it at one point. But it was found in Sunrise, near a strip mall at the intersection of Oakland Park Boulevard and Hiatus Road.
Several cars were recovered and several witnesses questioned throughout the night. ''We received information from witnesses and investigated everything they told us,'' said BSO spokeswoman Veda Coleman-Wright.
Jenne rushed to Broward General, where Tephford was pronounced dead at 12:01 a.m., to maintain a vigil for the wounded deputy.
Authorities were not divulging any information on the suspect or suspects in custody. BSO alerted authorities to be on the lookout for a 28-year-old man, Keith S. Smith, also believed to be connected to the shooting. No other details about him were immediately available.
The shooting happened shortly after 11 p.m. Saturday. As many as 10 shots were fired by the gunman inside the four-door Geo, BSO said.
Police helicopters hovered over the neighborhood where the Geo was discovered abandoned, hunting fugitives from the sky. Hundreds of officers, including dozens of officers with police dogs, combed through backyards.
At the Versailles Gardens -- the scene of the shooting -- entrances into the complex were cordoned off and deputies were stopping every car that entered the complex and examining the contents of its trunk.
''This is just insane,'' said Camille Pedone, 46, a resident of the condo complex. ``This is normally a very quiet area.''
Pedone and her roommate, Linda Dion, said they heard emergency sirens during the night but thought nothing of the sound -- a hospital is located nearby.
''I heard there was a reward offered but I'd turn them in for nothing,'' Dion said. ``If someone would shoot a cop then they would do anything.''
According to BSO, Tephford was a father of three young children, two of them twins. He was a six-year BSO veteran.
Carbocci is a father of four, including a stepson who is a fellow Broward Sheriff's deputy. Carbocci is a former truck driver who became a deputy three years ago.

I do wish you'd say what you mean, and not use these rather ambiguous
"smilies". We were asked for an opinion. In the absence of detail (as I
mentioned) it seems to me that the bald thug on the grass is using excessive
force and should be sacked from the police and up; I have no idea what
the person being punched did, or who he was - that wasn't in the question!

well the feds get involved sometimes. and our respective IAs (internal affairs) do the job, but they are departmental. by the same token, they are not to be messed with, they do a serious (and scary) job if you are the one under investigation. don't know of an indie agency like yours however.

An officer salutes during the funeral procession for slain Broward Sheriff's Office Deputy Brian Tephford this afternoon.
More than 2,000 law-enforcement officers gathered this afternoon at the Broward Center for the Performing Arts in Fort Lauderdale to pay their last respects to Broward Sheriff's Office Deputy Brian Tephford.
Sheriff Ken Jenne called Tephford -- who was gunned down during a routine traffic stop last weekend -- a hero.
''Brian was a hero not by choice, and certainly not by chance,'' Jenne said during his 13-minute eulogy. ``Brian was a hero by purpose.''
During the eulogy, Jenne also read a letter written by Tephford's 4-year-old daughter, Alyssa, who did not attend the service.
''My mommy told me a very bad man hurt my daddy,'' Jenne read. ``My daddy is dead. I was very sad. I cried and cried.''
Tephford's ex-wife, Stefani, cried as she was escorted into the theater.
None of the couple's three children attended the service.
Stefani Tephford ran up to the flag-covered casket and hugged it in the middle of the service.
Seated just behind Tephford's family in the theater was BSO Deputy Corey Carbocci, who was also shot Saturday while providing backup assistance to Tephford.
Carbocci, flanked by his wife, walked into the auditorium using a walker.
''You have been through hell and back these last five days,'' Jenne told Carbocci during the service. ``I want you to know your BSO family cares deeply for you.''
Tephford's colleagues in Tamarac and from other departments wiped away tears as they watched a six-minute video of his life.
The video presentation included baby pictures of Tephford, then as a toddler, then in middle school, and finally as an adult on a red motorcycle and in BSO uniform.
There were photos of him with Jenne and in his squad car.
There were also photos of Tephford with Alyssa, playing with her, washing a car with her, swimming with her, and holding her hand as she skates.
The ceremony ended with a 21-gun salute, Taps played by bagpipers and a flyover by helicopters from BSO, Miami-Dade police and the Palm Beach Sheriff's Office.
The memorial events began today with a funeral procession, led by hundreds of motorcycles and marked police cruisers at the T.M. Ralph Funeral Home, 371 NW 136th Ave. in Sunrise.
The procession shut down traffic along Broward Boulevard from Sunrise to Fort Lauderdale. All major intersections were closed as the procession passed. Uniformed police officers, firefighters and BSO employees lined the streets to honor Tephford as his hearse passed.
The hearse, flanked by motorcycle units, moved past the Fort Lauderdale Police Department on Broward Boulevard. Uniformed officers stood silently as the units passed by, according to Miami Herald news partner WFOR-CBS 4.
The hearse passed under a flag-draped archway created by two BSO Fire Rescue ladder trucks. A riderless horse with boots turned backward in the stirrups followed the procession up the driveway.
The riderless horse is a military tradition meant to symbolize the ride into the next stage of life. The reversed boots signify the fallen hero looking back on his troops as he passes on.
Tephford was shot and killed Saturday during a traffic stop in Tamarac. Carbocci, 37, was wounded in the incident. Three men have been arrested in connection with the shootings.
