The US population has hit 300 million people, just 39 years after it reached 200 million, according to US Census Bureau estimates.

That's a bit startling!

Jaysus, there's a lot of them. Ah well, they have lots of room over there, they'll be alright. I think they should give U.S. Citizen number 300,000,000 some kinda prize, like a shot on American Idol, or maybe a bit part in CSI Miami.

I was interested in the rate of growth... the population of much of Europe has,

I imagine, stayed within a few percent of figures 40 years ago. How come the

#States has had such a growth? Is much of it immigration?

40% of the growth is from immigration, 60% is from births outnumbering deaths..

I read in this story:

http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/15298443/

The U.S. adds about 2.8 million people a year, for a growth rate of less than 1 percent. About 40 percent of the growth comes from immigration. The rest comes from births outnumbering deaths.

I am pretty sure the population of the EU is around 480 million, but the whole of Europe is more cause of Russia and Ukraine and all those ex-eastern-block countries. America does have a very high population increase rate, partly like someone said becuase of immigration and partly because of high birth rates. Its the sign of the healthy american libido if notthing else. Go America! is what I say, and of course always be protected if your having casual sex, not that I'm advocating casual sex, or contraception if your against that sort of thing, but you know what I mean.

Why? are the white people too uptight? There would be quite a lot of "European" in hispanic (whatever that means) people as well wouldn't there? I thought they were the largest immigrant grouping?

Interesting point? No they probably have waves of immigrants from nicuragua and el salvador, its like a conveyor belt, all the white folk will end up living in innuit territory, they're better in the cold anyway.

Scrat wrote: I wouldn't say that it's just that "native" Americans aren't having children like we used too. Me and my Sigo are DINKS. Dual income no kids. Personally I don't want to have kids because of the really screwed up situation in the schools and the fact that they would have to go to school in some of the worst conditions imaginable. There are others.

Seems that Hispanics don't believe in birthcontrol either. Many people coming into America now are from further south than Mexico. It is like a conveyor belt Gal.

Sorry I get confused with all these hypenated americans, when you say native american do you mean you are a white people, or what we used to call Indians? (You know my friend is married to a girl from New Delhi, I must ask her what Indian people ever made of Europeans calling indigenous americans Indians), they just probably looked at each other shrugged and smiled sadly. Oh well.

We are besieged by illegal immigration here. And we're the victims of our own prosperity.

The "good" news? I don't think anyone's happy with this kind of population growth. (Well, if you're Mormon or Roman Catholic, perhaps you are.)

The "bad" news? It might take a solution such as the Chinese have implemented to stop the birth rate and it WILL take a "wall" of some sort to stop illegal immigration.
