The Simpsons has eclipsed classics like Tom & Gerry, to be named the greatest cartoon.

Matt Groening's 16-year creation has topped a poll of 100 best cartoons voted for by British TV viewers.

Homer, Marge, Bart and Lisa beat Hanna Barbera's Tom and Gerry to second place.

The characters of the Simpsons are named after Groening's family.
