Gun control, hunting, plane crashes and Muslims.

Post by BabyRider »

I will admit to knowing very little about the Muslim faith. The smidge that I do know, I have learned from here, on FG. Our most current episode with the rioting and upheaval in regards to the Mohamad cartoon has got me to thinking.

It's like other topics where you only hear the worst about it, when in fact, the large percentage of it is safe, or peaceful or right.

You hear about plane crashes: "Oh my Lord, 183 people killed, a travesty a national tragedy" But you don't hear about the thousands and thousands of planes that take off and land safely.

You hear about a hunter accidentally shot in the woods during deer season and for a while it's "Well, time to ban all hunting" when in fact thousands of hunters go into the woods every year and come out having shot nothing more than their prize buck.

You hear about a child shot that had gotten hold of his parent's handgun and yep, sure enough, time to ban any and all guns. You don't hear about the thousands, the hundreds of thousands of responsible gun owners who never have a mishap.

Anyone else see a correlation here????

I will concede that there are peaceful Muslums.
Far, I am a long way from giving benefit of the doubt myself. I hold them suspect as well, and I also know that yes, there are peaceful Muslims. I think the ones currently in the news rioting, burning their cities and causing the mayhem they are causing are doing their case more harm than good. They profess a "peaceful" lifestyle and then turn around and lob another molotov cocktail. I'm confused about the whole thing mainly because I don't understand the religion behind it, the koran, the way of life these people lead or want, and I am trying to learn. There's a whole lot in my life that doesn't make sense right now, and if I can get some of this peripheral stuff cleared up, maybe my mind set for my more personal life confusions can be attacked from a different angle, with more wide open eyes.

I'm not making much sense, I don't think, but I know what I mean. I'll just keep reading and see what else I can learn.

Wow, BR, way to pack all the significant things in ONE thread title!!

I wholeheartedly agree with you on this. ESPECIALLY, dare I say it,

on the gun control bit.

I think about the good things a lot, I sort of force myself to, and

concentrate on keeping my stress level down, because it does affect me.

I try, anyway.

I wonder how anyone could convince "the media" to give that kind of

stuff a rest and report on other things? The positive side? I hear

people ask for it sometimes (letters to the editor or whatever) but

it doesn't seem to get much response. And what do WE try and do to

effect change? Turn the tv off, not buy the paper? How do we really

make a difference?

I just saw the paralells and had to comment. I try to stay positive, too, for all the friggin' good it's done me lately, but I still try. I think it's a very sad commentary on what the American public would rather see and read about. Or the majority, any way. They would rather hear about murder and chaos and rape and all the other sick sh!t that goes on in the world. It makes their mundane lives seem that much more exciting or, misery loves company. I don't really know, actually. If there was an answer on how to affect the change, I'd be there, putting it into action. When I come up with said plan, I'll be sure to drop a post!

Oh, and moverguy? Are you being sardonic? Something to contribute here somewhere or just spouting off? Inquiring minds want to know.

DUUUHHHH UMMMM WEEEELLLLL UUUMMMMMM

ok then l looked it up in various dictionaries etc.

here l shall give one example of each or people may start falling asleep like flies...

(collins dictionary)

Muslim, muslims; also spelt Moslem

1 (noun) A Muslim is a person who believes in Islam and lives according to its rules

2 (adjective) Relating to Islam

Islam (pronounced iz-lahm)

(noun) Islam is the Muslim religion, which teaches that there is only one God, Allah, and Mohammed is his prophet. The holy book of Islam is the Koran.

Strangely nothing about states etc??

BR you are absolutely CORRECT in what you say. Good news rarely makes headlines. If someone was to be put a 'Happy channel' on the TV or publish the 'The Happy Daily Star', no one would be interested. The negative side of Human Nature I guess. :-6

We should post a poll about what FG members would rather hear about: all the sick, sad sh!t in the world, or some good, happy, uplifting news.

Sure, I want to be informed, but for the love of Pete, (who the hell IS Pete anyway?) I can use good things to hear in my every day life.

The scary thing about Islam is that it is not just a religion; it’s a political ideology that hides behind the doors to the mosque. I’m not so concerned about not hearing from the moderates, I’m more concerned about what we don’t hear from the radicals and what the so called moderates say when their not talking to the press.

http://www.pbs.org/empires/islam/faithpeople.html

Muslims believe that God had previously revealed Himself to the earlier prophets of the Jews and Christians, such as Abraham, Moses, and Jesus. Muslims therefore accept the teachings of both the Jewish Torah and the Christian Gospels. They believe that Islam is the perfection of the religion revealed first to Abraham (who is considered the first Muslim) and later to other prophets. Muslims believe that Jews and Christians have strayed from God's true faith but hold them in higher esteem than pagans and unbelievers. They call Jews and Christians the "People of the Book" and allow them to practice their own religions. Muslims believe that Muhammad is the "seal of the prophecy," by which they mean that he is the last in the series of prophets God sent to mankind. Muslims abhor the followers of later prophets. This attitude serves to explain the extreme Muslim animosity toward Bahais, followers of a nineteenth-century prophet, who in the Muslim mind is false.

Everything said about muslim fundamentalists can also be said about christian fundamentalists, be they catholic or protestant. As a non christian I will not be going to heaven. As the wrong kind of christian I will not be going to heaven.

There are `many so called cgristians who by their actions demonstrate they are anything but just as there are many muslims who by their actions demonstatere they are anything but true muslims.

Both christianity and islam are selfish religons that want their way and none other. Maybe we should do away with both:sneaky:

Maybe, we should just do away with all organized religion of any sort. That'd suit me right down to the ground.

You know what? We've got a real problem here...the "good stuff" is, dare I say it?

Boring.

That's why we see so much negativity and fear on the media. I've been fighting this battle through thread after thread, but it's a losing battle.

Why would a kid want to listen to "The 1812 Overture" when you can listen to "Fitty Cent" pimping his wares?

Who wants to watch "The Partridge Family" when 'Desperate Housewives" is on?

and (this is for you, BR) why show a poodle-contest on the front page when you can show a pit-bull attack?

The media, and GOD how I hate it, is merely a reflection of ourselves. They make the movies and the music that we want to see and hear.

The Muslims are no less immune to this. Why preach peace, when it's more fun to burn down an embassy?

Need more proof? Was it really neccessary to burn and loot L.A. over the Rodney King verdict? Or was some of that just more fun than your usual Saturday night reruns?:o

Sadly Jives I think you're right....which newspapers sell the most copies.... the tabloids full of scandal, violence, invasion of privacy, sex , gossip etc etc.

Happily, most of us have choices.....I for one have become very selective in what I watch and read ...I just wish that parents would spend time with their kids helping them to make the right choices as well so that vilonce, greed, sex, crime etc is not percieved to be the 'norm'.

My daughter's friends used to tell me I was an up to date Mum as they hated their Mum's.I would always tell them"One day you & your Mum will be the best of friends".I often remind those kids of that now when I get to see them & they do agree with me...........now;)

Ha Ha....sounds VERY familiar to me ....it is one of my grandsons birthday soon...he'll be 9. I have bought him a set of three books...Harry Potter style...in the hopes that he will sit and read. I'm a little pessimistic though.

The problem is that parents today won't give their TIME although it is FREE. They prefer to pay mega amounts of money for playstaions etc. When the 'monkeys' come to my house, we play Happy Families. Scrabble, Jigsaw puzzles...all the old fashioned stuff.

mrsk...I keep forgetting to tell you how much I like you AV. I love flowers, but thought I'd make a change and have some cute monkeys instead.

Please don't you change a tiny little hair on your head!! Being old fashioned, to me, means still believing in innocence and decency, courtesy and respect. A great way to be, for anyone.;)
