Kayla is acting strange
Our now 12 year old dog has been acting soooooo needy - in a very strange way. It has really alarmed me and BTS. Her behavior is quite different in the past 2 weeks than it has ever been. I am wondering if maybe I need to take her to the Vet to see if she has some major internal problem - like diabetes, cancer, organ failure. She seems very healthy - still running and eating and shedding her winter coat - no extras on the food or water front - her stool is quite healthy. I have no idea what is going on. She's spayed so I know her Chihuahua boyfriend hasn't knocked her up.

Don't mean to scare you NVV but older dogs do sometimes get a little
senility. Everything else sounds good. I would think she'd be drinking a lot
more water is she had started developing diabetes.
How is she going in and out of doors? Does she show even slight
confusion sometimes? (i.e. turning to the hinge side of the door
expecting it to open)
Might be worth a vet check to ease your mind.

any changes in her eating and sleeping habits? those too are signs of something is up?

I was really hoping you would answer Val.
Her confusion is whether or not she wants in or out of the house. She comes in and wants out. She goes out and wants in. All ins and outs within 15 minutes of it getting dark outside.
We added another cat to the house a month ago. It is a full grown cat and did nothing but smoooze the Kayla. Kayla KNOWS not to chase any other animal in the house. Could this be the problem?

That is strange. Sometimes another animal is enough to upset them,
but it's really hard to say. Does she check around the house for the
new kitty? Is the kitty an inside/outside one? When you say she's needy,
is it when the kitty is there, too? Does she try and place herself
between you and the kitty or something?

Had some additional thoughts on this late last night... is it possible her
asking to go out is feeling she needs to urinate? That she's a good girl
who doesn't want to do it in the house? Then, of course, she would ask
back in afterwards. During the day, she doesn't have to do this.
Old girls do sometimes get UTI's.

VAL ....Thanks for all the suggestions. The new cat just smooozes the Kayla. The old dog hunts the new cat out at times ........I think Kayla just does this to make sure each and every day that the Cat is still here.........BTW - the new cat has made itself at home and we have yet to name her. It may be a jealousy thing but I also took to HEART your suggestion that it is UTI. The Kayla does seem to have problems in the middle of the night.......she jumps on me in bed wanting out (she has always known better). She goes in and out very early in the morning AND wants to do the in and out thing around 9 pm.
Thanks Val - I will have that checked out. I do have to say that if she has any kind of organ failure - I WILL put her down. We have too many people med bills to pay. :-1

Don't even go there! I'm too old to hold it all night too. At 12 in dog years she is 72.......

I get up about 3 times at night now. I have to pee about 10 times during the day......I have to tell you it isn't very much at a time........
. I thought I was really strange for the past 21 years 'cause it all started with my one and only full term pregnancy. The little girl screwed my innards up. When I asked my new GP about it last September he told me that the pregnancy stretched my urethra and my hips so much as to deliver a 10 pound kid. I also got news from my OBGYN that having my first kid at 30 whacked my lower regions. :driving: ........The T-Girl was 5 lb. 13 oz. Now he wants to put me on these drugs you see advertised on TV that have all those side effects - like liver damage, kidney damage, heart problems........you get the picture. I'd just rather RUN to the bathroom than introduce all those chemicals to my body.
Geez - I just got really graphic.....sorry.

I know I'm going way past the bounds of good taste, but I pee like a race horse every two hours... day or night. Granted, I do drink a LOT of water, but come on! I'd like to sleep more than two hours without having to pee, for pete's sake.
Girlfriend..............you drink a lot of water because you pee like a racehorse and vice-versa. I find it a circle I'm trapped in. I drink therefore I pee.......I pee therefore I drink.........ROFLMAO

Every 2 hours during the day is fine. Then you know you're properly
hydrated. I do limit my fluids a little bit in the evenings to avoid having
to get up too much at night. Can't get back to sleep sometimes. But
I only get up once, and every once in a while... sleep the whole night
through. It's glorious when that happens!!
I can't believe I'm going to say this, but do your Kegels, ladies. It helps!
