A demagogue (/ˈdɛməɡɒɡ/; from Greek δημαγωγός, a popular leader, a leader of a mob, from δῆμος, people, populace, the commons + ἀγωγός leading, leader), or rabble-rouser, is a political leader in a democracy who gains popularity by arousing the common people against elites, especially through oratory that whips up the passions of crowds, appealing to emotion by scapegoating out-groups, exaggerating dangers to stoke fears, lying for emotional effect, or other rhetoric that tends to drown out reasoned deliberation and encourage fanatical popularity. Demagogues overturn established norms of political conduct, or promise or threaten to do so.

And that second dictatorship, I suggest, is how the Society of the Cincinnati gained its name.

Spurius Maelius was extrajudicially murdered, problem solved, the Republic was saved and the hero went back to his farm. That's the legend put together by the politically-minded early historians of the Republic. Livy was not, I would suggest, a trustworthy reporter, much as I enjoy his tales.

But I might take to calling the ex-President "Spurius Trump" from now on, it would annoy folks. Here's Livy again describing the wealthy plebeian who could wield the mob. "Wherever he moved, conspicuous and consequential beyond an ordinary mortal, they followed him, and this popularity seemed to his hopes a sure earnest of a consulship. But the minds of men are never satisfied with Fortune's promises, and he began to entertain loftier and unattainable aims; he knew the consulship would have to be won in the teeth of the patricians, so he began to dream of royalty. Did Senator Byrd shake off the politics of his dubious youth and emerge into public approbation? I do hope so. Speaking from experience, someone in his early twenties is very much influenced by his upbringing. I can't see why his subsequent abandonment of those positions should be rejected as opportunist. West Virginia was shockingly backward.
