If You Were Committed To A Psychiatric Institution ...
... unsure if you’d ever return to the life you knew before, what would you take with you?
We know almost nothing about the human mind and about what causes a person to become “insane.” But we know why people murder, rape and abuse people including young children.
So why are so called “lunatics” committed to an asylum for life while murderers, rapists and pedophiles often walk free after a mistrial when a simple error is made by police or the prosecution?
Makes me think something isn’t right.
Anyway here are few images of all that remains behind of some unfortunate people who were committed to this asylum.
Makes we want to weep.
Asylum The exterior of Chapin House, Willard’s central building that was demolished in the 1980s.
Anna’s suitcase.
Flora’s trunk.
Floyd’s empty suitcase.

There's a series of programmes running at the moment on Broadmoor...the first programme was looking at the history of the place and how many women were committed to asylums because of post natal depression. This happened to my Great. Grandmother, Eliza, who was sent to an asylum near Bristol. In the admissions book her occupation was imbecile.
At least there appears to be a kinder approach to mental illness in the present day.

One of the scary things learned when closing old asylums is that there were many patients who had been there for 50 years or more, for whom there was no record of why they were originally sent there. For some of the private asylums, it was known that wealthy parents sent daughters away who embarassed the family by becoming pregnant or dating outside their social circle. In one case, a 70+ year old woman was being released with no records or recollection as to why she had been forced to spend her whole life there.

Don't forget about husbands who once a upon a time could have their wives legally committed on a whim. Back in hte good ole' days where divorce carried a stigma and committing your wife was a far easier exercise.

That's tragic. Community underwear? At least Rosemary Kennedy lived a comfortable life and was well cared for. Too bad her ass hole father thought scrambling her brain until she couldn't form a coherent sentence was a great solution to her rowdiness.

I work with brain damaged children.
I am employed by the council as a passenger escort for brain damaged children In transit to special needs schools.
I don't like the early mornings. My first run means getting up at 5.30 am but I wouldn't swap It for anything.
All of my charges are so special In their own ways and It would break my heart to think of any of them In such an Institution where they would be so frightened and bewildered. Thank god we have come such a long way since those days and ' my ' special children are In schools that nurture and encourage,

I wouldn't be so sure about that not when we live in an age when it is acceptable for the government to pillory anyone on disability benefit as a cheat and a scrounger. There are still plenty who think such children should be hidden away. It's not that long ago that people would be institutionalised for being feeble minded and once the tories repeal the human rights act who knows what they'll get up to.

True but these children are not those with a disability that would be questionable once they are old enough to work. They are high dependency brain damaged who will need care all of their lives.
